The MADD Juneau Chapter has started a "Youth in Action"(YIA) program in the Juneau Douglas High School. A Southeast Youth in Action in Ketchikan, Sitka and Wrangell has also been developed.
YIA teen and adult volunteers will learn about the deadly effects of alcohol to youths and the consequences. YIA groups will be trained to become advocates of MADD issues and speak to local associations, local and state elected officials and other youth groups.
Over 50 YIA members from Juneau, Ketchikan, Sitka, Wrangell were trained by MADD National Youth in Action staff in Juneau January 25th and 26th, 2002. The students met with state legislators January 28th and 29th using the training they received.
YIA members hope to attend a MADD Power Camp in Seattle, Washington this summer. A 2003 Alaska powercamp is in the planning for the following year.
