Sam AJ Pillay

Sam Pillay is a freelance journalist based in Sydney. He has worked in Malaysia as a radio broadcaster, as a newspaper reporter in Newcastle, New South Wales, where he was awarded the Northern Provincial District Award for Best News Story of the Year in 1976, and on the leading Sydney metropolitan dailies - The Australian, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Australian Financial Review.
He has sub edited finance, politics, general features and sport on these Sydney dailies. He sub edited, wrote leaders and features and filed reports for the London NewsLine daily newspaper in the mid-80s.
He is an authority on Indonesian and Malaysian culture and politics. Sam has travelled extensively in Indonesia and has lived and worked in Malaysia.
He was among the first journalists to visit occupied East Timor, in 1989, shortly after the territory was opened to visitors, has visited the timber-felling regions of Kalimantan (Borneo) and spent time in Aceh.
Sam Pillay spent eight years in Wellington, New Zealand - until 1998 - where he worked freelance on Radio New Zealand national and international and was an associate editor of New Zealand Retail magazine.
He took time out in Wellington to operate a café-restaurant, a departure that has proved valuable to his understanding of small-to-medium enterprise.
He is knowledgeable on Maori affairs as a result of his New Zealand sojourn.
He has reported for Soluton6's eaccountancy.com news service in Sydney. His most recent fulltime position was as editor of Australian Pharmacist, the journal of the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia.
He accepts freelance commissions from around the world. The e-Zine rattanlink.com publishes Sam Pillay on rattan furniture design and trade in the region.
Sam is an experienced editor and accepts commissions to edit works in politics, current affairs, the humanities and general prose.
He also accepts commissions to report and write general news and features.

Sam Pillay's interests are politics, philosophy, literature, world cultures and current affairs. He follows finance, the corporate sector, health and medical issues and can write fluently in a number of categories.
Current Work
At present, apart from his daily freelance journalism, he is trying his hand at a novel. He dabbles in poetry writing.
Sam Pillay follows the New York Times, Washington Post, the Economist and the World Wide Web on a range of current issues as part of his daily work routine.
