Mining is a very good way of making money. You can do one of two things with it. Some people will just buy the ores off of you or you can smelt the ores.
If you decide to smelt the ores, then that will raise your Smithing levels.
To mine you will need to get a pick axe. You can buy one in the mining store in the dwarven mines or at bob's axe shop in lumbridge, kill a dwarf, or there is a respawning one in barbarian village.
Once you have the pick axe, go to anywhere that there are large numbers of rocks. These are mining sites. Some are underground, others are near the cities or in the wilderness.
Go to the rock and right click it. Choose prospect. This will tell you what type of ore is there. If you can not mine the ore then it will say that there is nothing interesting.
If you manage to locate ore, use your pick axe with rocks. Sometimes you will be able to obtain an ore. Other times you won't.
