place your knoppix cd into your computer.

restart your computer

in the boot menu, just hit enter. if you have a new video card or a new raid controller, knoppix might not work on your computer.

once knoppix is working, click the K menu, then Knoppix, then Network/Internet, then Network Card Configuration.

a popup will ask you if you want to use DHCP Broadcast, hit no.

on the next few popups, input your ip, broadcast, net mask, gateway, and name server addresses.

the virus scanning software does not come on the knoppix disk, so you will have to get the software over the internet.

to do this, go to K menu, Knoppix, Utilities, Install Software.

in this menu, click on f-prot, the anti virus software.

once the software is downloaded, there should be a new desktop item that will hold f-prot.

once you have clicked on f-prot in the folder, you will see a few different options.

click the option to download new virus defintions.

next, choose the option to select which drive to scan.

if your hard drive does not show up on the list, you might have to find your hard drive and mount it first, and then retry in f-prot.

after you have selected the drive, you are ready to start scanning.

now that that is done, you can start patching your windows.

first, you have to mount your windows partition with read/write mode.

this can be accomplished by right clicking on the partition then click actions, then Change Read/Write Mode.

now you can start searching the internet for windows patches, to be safe only get patches from microsoft sites.

once you have the patch, just save it to your windows partition, so you can easily insall it the next time you run windows.

Broadcast - defines your location for other computers to find you.

Net Mask - a 32-bit mask internet address that is divided amoungst the network.

Gateway - a device that sits between networks and redirects packets towards their actual destination.

Name Server - holds the name of all the computers on the network.
