If you can spare a couple of hours a week, maybe you could help the Air Training Corps to train the next generation of young men and women. You don't need previous experience, just a willingness to learn a flexible attitude, and the ability to motivate young people.

There are 3 options available:

1. Civilian Instructors (C.I's).

These are Civilian volunteers who give as much or as little time as they wish. They join their local Squadron and assist in teaching the cadets in whatever subjects they are able whether it be Sport or Air Navigation. All the Classroom training is given from a specific syllabus with text books provided, so no specialist knowledge is required, although it is obviously a great bonus in some subjects. Joining as a CI is the usual entry point for all adult staff, although in some circumstances, exceptions can be made. The minimum age for a CI is 20.

2. Warrant Officers (WO's).

These are uniformed members of staff and are slightly more committed than CI's. WO's must put in a minimum of 12 hours per month, and are required to attend in uniform, this carries with it the responsibility of keeping hair cut within specified lengths and the uniform presented to an adequate standard. The WO is also responsible for the drill, discipline and deportment of the cadets in his/her Squadron and is equivalent to the Army's Sergeant Major. The minimum age for a WO is 22 and appointment is subject to passing a Wing interview board. WO's must complete a one week training course in the first 12 months after appointment.

3. Commissioned Officers.

These are slightly different from both they above, in that they are members of the Royal Air Force Volunter Reserve (Training) Branch - RAFVR(T) rather than members of the ATC. They hold the Queens Commission and once again are required to wear uniform, and commit a minimum of 12 hours per month. Officers may over time be promoted to Command a Squadron and ultimately to Command the Wing. The minimum age for an Officer is 22 and appointment is subject to passing a Wing and Regional interview board. Officers must complete a one week training course in the first 12 months after appointment.

Both Officers and Warrant Officers qualify for pay on appointment, when they are involved in supervising cadets on certain activities, for a specific length of time.

All adult staff members are eligible for payment of home to duty travel expenses to and from their Squadron on ordinary parade nights.
