Knowledge areas/ educational requirements:

Many mangers have experiences as systems analysts, computer support specialists, programmers, or other information technology professionals. Bachelor’s degree is usually required, although most employers often prefer a master’s degree in business administration (MBA) with technology. Some managers may have only an associate’s degree, provided they have sufficient experience and were able to learn additional skills on the job.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1)      Computer and information systems managers plan, coordinate, and direct research and design the computer-related activities of firms.

2)      They analyze the computer and information needs of their organization and determine personnel and equipment requirements.

3)      Most managers in this field have the final say in how the organization is going to be coordinated and which equipment is required.

4)      They are responsible for presenting information about technology that is the best weapon to benefit the organization that not only cuts cost, but also increase revenue.

Advancement & Promotion:

Manager position is the highest position in most cases so they are not really that many promotions. Most managers however do get a lot of bonuses, expense accounts and stock options that a regular employee would not get. Some advancement in this field is becoming managers in nontechnical areas such as marketing, human resources, or sales. 

Future Outlook:

By the year 2010, computer and information systems managers are expected to increase much faster than the average for all occupations. They will be more job openings because they will have to replace the retired managers or those who move into other occupations. The more the technology grows the more need for managers to keep the organization organized and to keep it a leading competitor with other organizations.
