Chapter 9
Retrieving Backup

Topaz was stretching her legs and yawning, while I trotted around the meadow. We were just waking up. Topaz continued stretching as I stopped and filled her in on my plans for the day. She nodded to me and suggested we get going. I encouraged her to not rush me too much, but I thanked her for being so understanding. After all, we were up very early. Six in the morning, by Earth standards.
      "Ok Mom, let's jump."
I smiled and grabbed the doorway into Marana. It was time to switch dimensions. I grabbed my daughter's hand, and we hurried through the doorway.
"Alright Topaz, we're going to the right now... Topaz?"
I looked around for my daughter. She was nowhere to be seen. I froze and blinked. She wasn't anywhere. She was in between dimensions. It had never before happened. At least, not in my lifetime. Sure, you could get caught in a Torino traveling between dimensions, but still! I'd never heard of not coming out. I opened the doorway and jumped back where we'd slept. She wasn't there. I quickly called for her, but she didn't answer. I jumped back to Marana, but she wasn't there either. What a predicament!
"Oooooooh no! This can't be happening!" I screamed into the afternoon air.
Marana has a different time from the Earth's dimension, so when it's morning on Earth it's afternoon in Marana.
I was standing in the middle of a town called COMplex. The buildings of the town were made from pure black stone, almost a marble type substance. The insides of the buildings were quite cool, because of how thick we'd had the walls built. There were a few cobblestone streets, one of which, I was standing on.
"Is that you, Sarrriah?" came a growl from behind me.
      I spun around and collapsed.

"Too much excitement forrr you, eh?"
I opened my eyes and closed them again. Everything was spinning. I felt nauseous.
"Please wake up. Herrre, I'll help you stand."
I opened my eyes again and found the world to be just fine. No spinning. I turned my head to the right and found my good friend Razor helping me up.
      "Oh Razor," I cooed.
I reached out a hand and softly stroked his face. He was standing on two legs, something most wolves aren't able to do. He got down on all fours, licked my face, and smiled, showing his chin long teeth.
"I missed you, Sarrriah," he said, still smiling.
"I missed you too, Razor. It's been a long time since I've seen you."
I struggled to stand up and slipped.
"It's okay," he said, helping me to my feet again.
I grabbed the scruff of his neck and pulled myself up.
"Are you okay, Razor? How have things been goOoOo..." I faded out.
Razor grabbed my arms as best he could and helped me to the floor. I leaned against a black stone wall and tried to remember what had been happening.
"What's wrrrong? What's going on?" asked Razor.
I covered my mouth with my right hand and gasped. I had so much to do and so little time.
"Razor, I came for your help. Everything's messed up, and I don't think I can do this. It's soooo amazingly hard and complex!"
Razor looked at me and sat down, just like a wolf would. "I'm listening, my mistrrress," he responded.
"Well, first of all, my daughter's stuck ‘in between'."
"Stuck in Tryn Myaad! However did she manage that?!" asked a very serious Razor.
"We were traveling over here to get some old friends, including you, and she didn't come through all the way. I traveled back, but she wasn't there either. She's stuck in between, in Tryn Myaad!"
Razor stood on all fours and commanded,"What else happened?"
"I met a young man named Trinian. He's been captured, but I'm not sure by who. He could either be with the Dragon's or in Zooloo. Resda's missing, but I can come into contact with her easily. She has a little healer named Eliza with her. Teran Mei, the new evil dragon, is trying to capture Eliza. I have no idea of where Brayan is yet. Kiol could be hurt, I'm not sure about hin. I've not heard from him since the last fight."
      "Fight? What fight?" asked Razor.
"I had to fight Teran Mei to get Eliza back, but Kiol stayed to finish fighting him while Resda and I escaped with Eliza. She was unconscious, so I'm not sure if she's alright.
      "What else?"
      "Well, then there's 3908."
      "The werewolf?" asked Razor.
"Right," I responded. "He's been injected with some fluid stuff from Teran. Last I saw, he was unconscious. I hope he's alright. Then.."
"Don't tell me there's more!" wailed Razor.
"Of course there is! We had to get the healer girl's parents involved. Sinc etheir daughter was captured, we figured it was only fair. I don't know if Eliza's been returned to them, if 3908 has attacked them, if they left 3908 by himself, or what all."
I broke down and cried. Razor lay beside me, watching me cry and trying to figure something out. We both knew the situation looked hopeless. But Razor reminded me that I was the Dragon Slayer, and that I could do anything if I tried hard enough. So we rose form the floor, hugged each other, and set off to fix the entire world. A wolf and a Dragon Slayer, together, going to fix the problems of four dimensions. What a chore!

"Okay, here's the creatures I need tracked down. Find the following: Kudo the Dragonfly, Tryun the Clarque, Frun the Werewolf, Lock Ness the Monster, Abom the Abominable Snowman...oh, wait, scratch Abom out. He won't like this adventure. Yeah, and grab a few extra Werewolves too. I think we can use a lot of help,"I told the group.
"Get moving people! We've got a lot of creatures to find and not much time!" cried Razor.
I was standing next to my husband and shaking hands as the Unicorns left to find the designated people on the list.
"Come on, you need some rest, Sariah," said my husband.
I smiled and touched my finger to his lips. "Sorry, dear. I've got to save our daughter in a while. No time for rest."
"But that's why we sent out these creatures! So you would get some rest while they were being round up!"
I smiled and thanked Brayan for looking out for me. He tried to get me back to our palace, but I wouldn't go with him. I told him I had ‘too many friends' and ‘too little time'. He finally conceded and led me to the Map room.
"Okay, everyone, here's the plan. I want fifteen Unicorns in Zooloo by tomorrow. I'll have the gate open at precisely 12:00 tonight. If we don't have them ready by then, we could lose a lot of friends and old hero's. Listen up real good now. I want all of the Unicorns told to persuade Queen Kleen of Zooloo to give up the war plans and sign a peace pact with us. Then I want Klyste brought to me. By then, I'll be in Earth's dimension. When I feel I need Klyste, I will open the door and let them through. Then I'll send them back here, to Marana. I need a group of scouts to go with me to Earth's dimension. There, we will try to stop the Dragons from doing any damage. Meanwhile, I want a line of Unicorns standing by, waiting to jump dimensions. We're going to try to get someone into a Torino. If that happens, we'll send them back immediately. Hopefully they'll become a flash. Just in case, we'll have every Unicorn trained and ready to rescue Topaz. This is so that no matter which one becomes caught in a Torino, they will be ready to help Topaz. Let's get going, we don't have much time."
I took a breath and looked to Brayan. He nodded to show that I had done a good job.
"Miss Sariah! Mr. Brayan! The creatures are down in Morrow Meadow," called a scout from the doorway.
The scout named Toran bowed and hurried away. I stood up and walked over to Brayan.
      "Here we go,"I told him.
He smiled and grabbed my hand. We hurried out of our palace and to the meadow. The creatures were all waiting and looked very excited.
"Alright! I'm taking a band of Werewolves with me. Get in line, Frun. Get your wolves together."
Frun, the leader of the Werewolves, stood in front and waited for a line to gather behind him. I hurried over and opened a doorway to Earth's dimension. Frun and the other's hurried through. I opened a doorway into Zooloo, and Lock Ness traveled through, with a Unicorn to tell him his mission. Then, I grabbed my husband, gave him a quick kiss, and opened a doorway into Earth's dimension again. I told Tryun and Kudo that I would be back for them shortly. They all waved, and I disappeared into the next dimension.
I appeared in the dimension I'd chosen. The leaves were green on the trees, and the bushes were covered with berries. I smiled and took a deep breath.
Suddenly, it occurred to me that I was alone. Looking this way and that, I search for the Werewolves. They were nowhere to be seen. I stifled a frustrated cry and yelled for them. No one answered. I opened a doorway into Zooloo and traveled there. There was no Lock Ness monster. The Unicorn I'd sent with him was missing too.
I gasped and fell to my knees. What would I do? I stood up again and looked around. What was going on? Why was I able to travle, but no one else? With a quick decision, I traveled back to the dimension I'd just come from. Everything was just the way I'd left it. I covered my mouth to stifle a sob this time. The Werewolves were missing.
Then I had a most horrid thought. What if they were all caught between dimensions? In Tryn Myaad? I felt sick. I should have checked the way through before sending all my friends in. If only I had sent one in to make sure it would work as it always did. I was all alone, and no one could travel now. I thought about it for a minute, but I could come to no conclusions as to how these trips were different from any others.
"Brayan, something's gone wrong,"I told him when I'd returned to Marana a moment later.
"What's going on, hun?" he asked me.
"Everyone's caught between dimensions. Everyone I sent over is caught down in Tryn Myaad."
"No way! That's terrible! I mean, now we can rescue Topaz, but that's awful! How are you still around?"
I sighed and threw up my hands, answering,"I don't really know, dear. That's the problem. I'm able to travel, but no one else can. It's all messed up. What if they're stuck in Tryn Myaad forever?"
Brayan pulled me to him and gave me a big hug. I needed it. Then he pushed me away, put a finger on my nose, and said,"They'll be alright. They've got Lock Ness to protect them. For now, get back to Earth's dimension and take care of that Dragon. Understood?"
I understood and told him so. He smiled, gave me one last hug, and pushed me away. I opened a doorway, smiled, waved, and hurried through.
