Chapter 2
Trinian
Something woke me from my nap. I stood up and checked on Topaz. She was still fast asleep. Stretching and yawning, I saw something out of the corner of my eye. I froze. Only moving my eyes, I looked in the meadow for something living. After a minute or so of searching, I noticed a strange looking patch of grass.
Most of the grass in that meadow was about six inches high. Usually unicorns would come and graze in the meadow, but they mostly stayed closer to the castle during the winter. So, the grass had grown out.
This particular patch of grass was so noticeable because it was flattened down. While the rest of the grass blew in the chilly wind, that patch of grass remained flat and motionless. Almost as if someone were standing on it.
Looking even closer, I noticed a shadow over the grass. It started at that strange patch. Strangely enough, the shadow didn't stretch across the grass. It stood straight up. Finally it clicked. The shadow must be a Clyuire.
I'd met up with one of these creatures called Clyuires before. One had chased me around in its shadow form during the GEW. It was frightening the first time I'd seen one.
This time I knew what it was, so I wasn't worried about it, but I was worried about its reason for coming.
"Why are you here?" I called out to it, keeping my voice as quiet as I could while letting it hear me.
The Clyuire glided just over the grass and landed a few feet away from me. It jumped back a foot. The Clyui'res head whipped to the left as if it had been smacked.
"Help me, Sariah!" the Clyuire screeched.
Topaz woke and scrambled to her hooves, asking,"Mom, what is it?!"
I kept my eyes on the shadow while answering Topaz's question.
"Topaz, don't be afraid,"I told her. "It's only a Clyuire in the shadow form. Remember me telling you the stories of them?"
Topaz nodded and relaxed a little.
I quickly asked the Clyuire,"How can I help you?"
The Clyuire screeched again and fell backwards. It looked like someone or something had rammed into it.
It gasped and said in a scratchy voice,"Pull me in, Dragon Slayer. Pull me in! I can't fully merge!"
Hearing him call me ‘Sariah' and ‘Dragon Slayer', I quickly changed to human. Looking straight at the Clyuire, I used a technique I'd learned over the years. Focusing on the shadow, I regrew my horn, lifted it to the sky, and let the brightness of the snow hit it at a certain angle. (I usually used the sun, but in this case, the glare of the snow worked fine.) I lowered my horn quickly, keeping the angle of my horn the same. I leveled the tip of my horn with the shadow's head.
Immediately the shaodw, meadow, and Topaz vanished. I found myself staring into Zooloo, the Clyuires' home world.
"Mom, are you getting him?" asked Topaz.
I reached out my hand to the now fully visible Clyuire, ignoring my daughter's question. I grasped its hand just as another Clyuire reached out to scratch it across the face.
"Mom, what's going on?!" Topaz yelled in a shaky voice.
Zooloo vanished and the Clyuire fully appeared in Marana. I fell to the ground and tried to catch my breath. I made the horn on my forehead disappear before my daughter could see it. That took up a lot more of my already used up energy.
"Mom!" Topaz yelled. "Mom, are you okay?!"
I smiled and sat up. Looking at the Clyuire, I smiled and explained what had happened to my daughter.
"I'm okay, honey. I just went to Zooloo for a very quick visit. This is how it happens. When the light is hitting my horn at such an angle and I point the tip of my horn at a living thing, I'm able to reach through dimensions and pull the other creature into the dimension I'm in. It's a special ability that comes with being a Dragon Slayer. When I pointed my horn at this Clyuire's head, all of Marana vanished. Even you, Topaz. I could still hear you, because I was in Marana. I just didn't answer, that's all. I was looking into Zooloo and grabbed this clyuire. Then I pulled him through."
"But Mom, how did we see him if he was in Zooloo, wherever that is?"
I laughed and looked at the Clyuire.
"You see," said the Clyuire,"we can merge into dimensions we've already been to. I've been to Marana before, so I could merge here. I was having some trouble though. I've only done it one other time. The dragons can do it too, but they're even more restricted with their merges than we are. They can only merge from the dragon dimension to a dimension they'v ebeen to before. Then, from the dimension their currently in, they can only merge back to the dragon dimension. It's very complicated, I know. Luckily your mother has no restrictions. That's because she's the Dragon Slayer. I am eternally grateful, Your Majesty."
I smiled and looked closely at the Clyuire while asking,"Do I know you?"
He smiled widely and answered,"No, Your Highness. You do not know me. Though, I know you very well."
I caught myself frowning, wondering how this could be.
"If I may explain, Your Excellency?" asked the Clyuire.
"You may speak," I told him.
The Clyuire looked down at the ground in thought, then brought his eyes back up to mine.
"Can I changed first, My Lady?"
"Of course you may," I answered.
With a smile, the young Clyuire changed. He changed so fast that I didn't know what he was becoming before he'd already completed the change. He was a human! I stared at him in surprise, then sat down and waited to hear his story. Topaz sat down beside me and crossed her arms across her chest, clearly not impressed.
"I guess I'll start from the beginning," began the boy.
(He couldn't have been any more than two years older than my daughter.) I nodded and waited for him to begin.
"I was in a play. I had to learn how to use a sword for this play. I had to use a real sword, they said, because it would make it look more real. So, I practiced with that sword. Someone told me something about a special scene where I would fight someone. I shrugged it off and said that, that would be fine. I took the sword home with me, getting permission first, and practiced some more. While I was in my backyard, I noticed something in the grass. Running towards the woods, I looked to see what it was. I brought my sword along without thinking about it. Something jumped out of the woods at me. It knocked me to the ground and opened its mouth. I think it wanted to eat me, but it didn't get a chance. Next thing I knew, this horse was on top of the scaled creature. I scrambled back and took a closer look at the two creatures. One was a dragon, and the other was a unicorn. I was amazed at the sight of both of them. Seeing the unicorn getting beat and forgetting my fear, I rushed at the dragon with my sword. The dragon was just lowering its ugly head to sink its teeth into the unicorn's throat and finish him off. I dove at the dragon's neck and swung my sword. The dragon screamed in pain and jumped backwards. I watched as he swung his head straight up and screeched. I took my chance and plunged the sword into the dragon's heart. It collapsed on the ground and breathed its last. The unicorn told me to take my sword and clean it off. It was an extremely messy job. I guess the hardest part was getting the dragon to roll over. You see, he'd fallen onto his stomach and I had to totally roll him over to get my sword out. After a very long time, I got my sword and cleaned it off in the grass. Then the unicorn told me about this place. I mean, it was really weird at first, but it all began to make sense. He told me all about you, Sariah. He told me about everything that had happened. It was strange, but I felt like I had to come back with him. So he brought me here. He took me to Zooloo and showed me how to become a Clyuire. He's a great guy. And you're a great lady. Thank you so much for saving me."
I smiled, then frowned. "You're welcome. Tell me something, though. What was the name of this unicorn?"
The Clyuire smiled and said,"His name's Kiol. And I'm Trinian. Do you know Kiol?"
I laughed and said,"Of course I do! He's one of my best friends. I wonder why he didn't tell me about you?"
Trinian shrugged and said,"Oh well."
"So, why was that other Clyuire fighting you, Trinian?" I asked the boy.
Trinian clapped his hands together and exclaimed,"Oh yeah! That's the whole reason I wanted here. Besides the fact that I wanted away from that awful creature, I wanted to warn you about the creatures from Zooloo. You see, they've all turned against you. Kiol told me all about the GEW and how the creatures from Zooloo had decided to fight with the dragons. Well, they'd never been given a chance to fight in the war. Now they're rebelling. Even though they know the dragons are gone, they're determined to beat all of you. You've got to run, like right now. They're coming, and you'll be the first targets. Kiol's already told Brayan. He was warning him about this nine years ago. Brayan should be gone by now, so it's time for you two to get moving."
I nodded and grabbed Topaz's arm. Topaz looked up at me. I saw how scared she was and tried to smile.
"Come on, Topaz. Let's listen to him and get going,"I instructed.
Topaz nodded and gave me a huge hug. Trinian grabbed my wrist and told me we'd be safer in Earth's dimension. I nodded again and grabbed Topaz's hand. Trinian reached out and grasped my hand. I smiled at them both and told them to hold on. Grabbing the rubber that separated all of the different dimensions, I paused for a moment. I waited for the right dimension to run by in my head. Then I ripped the rubber open and shaped it into a doorway. Through the doorway I stepped, with Topaz and Trinian following me. We were in Earth's dimension. We were safe....for the moment.
