Chapter 8
Help Arrives
I awoke to a pain in my side. I screamed in agony and spotted a gaping wound. I quickly changed to human and sat up.
When you change from one form to another, the new form does not take on the wound or pain. But if you change back to your original form, the wound will be there and the pain too.
I looked over at Brian and saw that he was also in human form.
"Same thing happened to me," he told me.
I groaned, moaned, and stood. A guard came in and unlocked our cages. He grabbed our wrists and threw us out of the cages. We fell to the floor, hitting our heads on the stone. I was getting used to the color black.
I eventually woke up. The pain in my head was bearable, so I stayed as I was. Unicorn would only make my side hurt, and there was no use being bulky like the Centaur. Brian was sitting beside me, his arm was cushioning my head.
"Thanks pillow man," I told him.
He smiled slightly, but there wasn't much more he could do. We hadn't been smiling for nearly a month. At least, not often. I twitched the side of my mouth up, trying to attempt a smile. He just shook his head, rolled his eyes, and made a slight grin. I accomplished a grin this time, and he smiled a real smile. I smiled too.
Looking around, I found all stone walls. Except for a Unicorn standing in a cage. It slowly changed to Centaur and pushed the door open. Then it changed back to its normal self.
"Listen up now, you pathetic humans. I have been sent to rescue you. Come with me quietly, and I'll take good care of you. I'm the Unicorn you captured when you were a Dragon, Sarah, remember? Thankfully I have been trained to escape from any cage or bonds. Coming, or not?"
I frowned and looked at the Unicorn. "I'm so sorry. I was really mixed up then. Please forgive me, ok?" I apologized, feeling badly for capturing it when it had tried to save me.
It nodded and turned toward the locked door. I wanted to talk to Brian in private before going with the Unicorn but heard the haste in its voice.
I said,"Yeah, sure."
It nodded its head and told us to go Unicorn. I formed my Unicorn self, and Brian did the same. We followed the gray Unicorn, with white spots on its rump and a gray mane out the door. It led us to a secret door and changed to Centaur. She was beautiful and had shoulder length blonde hair. She gripped her hands around a stone in the wall and pulled it out. The stone revealed a small button. The Centaur pushed the button and the door opened. She quickly put the block back and changed to Unicorn.
"Hurry! My name's Centuri. I am a Unicorn of course, sent by the Unicorn located at the Sparkle. Come, we must hurry."
I followed quickly, then remembered all the amazing creatures in the cave. I stopped running and even stopped walking. I stood stock still, trying to decide. Brian noticed that I had stopped and stood beside me. Centuri didn't notice that we weren't following her.
"I can't do this," I whispered. "The wonderful creatures, and all of my dreams and hopes came true here!"
"We have to! We can't stay here, Sarah. You know that! Don't be stubborn. This Unicorn came to save us, and we should be thankful."
I nodded and let the tears fall. They streamed down my cheeks as I put one foot in front of the other. I watched my Reebok shoes hit the stone floor. I sobbed as I walked down the long tunnel. Salty tears slid down my cheeks, in my mouth, and off my chin. I didn't care. I wanted the creatures I'd always wanted to see. I wanted them badly now. Sob after sob, tear after tear. I could barely see anything. I wiped my eyes clear of tears, and more came. I could not control myself. I was confused, mad, sad, happy, depressed, scared, brave, and much, much more. I fell to the ground, letting my tears fall between the different stones in the floor.
"No! We must keep walking!" Brian hissed in my ear. "We have to!"
I looked up at him and tried to speak. I slowly felt my body changing. Brian jumped back as my head turned scaly. It all happened so quick. I lunged at Brian with my Dragon body, and he fell to the stone floor hard. He fell very hard.
I ran after the Unicorn. It turned to fight me. I clawed its back; it got my throat with its horn. I hissed and growled, while falling to the floor. Black was too common a color for me. I was tired of falling unconscious all the time.
I woke under a bright light. My arms were sore, and my ankles hurt badly. I tried to look down at them but found my neck tightly secured. I moved my ankles and sobbed inwardly. It hurt to move my legs, ankles, and feet. I tried to move my ankles some more, clenching my teeth to keep from rousing anyone. Wherever I was, I wasn't welcome. I rubbed my ankles sore and stopped when I almost screamed. I tried to look at my ankles, but I couldn't. My neck was cold with the metal clamp on it. My wrists were cold and sore. I swished my tail. That was still free. I was laying on a cold stone table. I knew that. I could turn my head to the side and see down the table. I tried to look at my feet, but they were too far down. I looked at the glass ceiling above me. The sun shone through and hurt my eyes. I looked to my left and saw Brian. He looked at me and walked slowly towards me. I hissed, and he stopped. He approached again and didn't back off the next time I hissed. He kept coming closer and closer.
"Get away!" I screeched.
He walked closer to me. I snapped my jaws together and reached my neck as far as I could. He was still three feet away, but I would try anyway. He walked closer and closer in his little human body. It was little compared to mine. I suddenly knew what to do. I changed to human. Smiling, I slipped from my bonds and ran toward him. He ran from me. I quickly stopped and changed to Dragon. There was a mirror, and behind that mirror was a surveying room. We ran around the room with its stone walls a couple times, till I cornered Brian. I leaped, and he dove under my legs. I spread my wings and hissed. He rolled under the stone table. I slid under it after him. He slid out easily, and I jerked my huge body out from under it. Brian ran from me, and I cornered him again. I spread my wings, trapping him completely. He looked for a way out but couldn't find one. I smiled a vicious smile and pulled my wings closer to him. He stiffened and scrunched his body to make it narrower. I wrapped my wings around him, pulling him a foot closer.
"What's wrong, Brian? Are we scared again?"
He whimpered while trying to find a way out. I pulled him right up to my face and hissed. He turned his face from me, but I reached out a scaly hand and grabbed his chin, pulling his face back to where he could look at me.
"Scared?"
He nodded and tried to look away. I raised my wings an inch, so he could not look over them. He whimpered even louder now.
"SCARED?!" I yelled at him.
"Yes! Please, let me go! Sarah, you aren't like this! It's the Dragon's nature!"
I smiled mockingly and said,"I am now." I opened my mouth and showed my teeth. He looked at my mouth in horror. "You know what? Black used to be my favorite color, but no more. I hate the color now," I said, just before getting another wack to the head.
I opened my eyes. Tired of black, I did not close them again even though I was still tired. I sat up and looked around. I was sitting in a small stone room. The floor was bare except for a fur rug in the left corner, and an observation mirror was in front of me. I rolled my eyes and stood up. I stretched my legs and flexed my fingers. Opening and closing my jaw, I got it to work right again. It hurt terribly and I tried to keep it set straight. My jaw kept wanting to swing over to the left, but I did not let it. A part of the wall disappeared and in stepped two Unicorns. They moved out of the way of the tunnel to let Brian in.
"I see your jaw is still looking bad."
I glared at him and moved my jaw to its normal place. He laughed at me, but there was sympathy in his eyes.
"I don't want your sympathy!" I spat.
He frowned and looked at the floor. "What happened to the old Sarah? What happened to the beautiful Princess? Where is she? Why have you taken over! Why?!"
He sounded desperate to get me back, but I was not going to be weak any longer.
"Sarah is gone. Only Huirette is left. That is my new name. Never ever say my old name again. That was a weak, caring Sarah. I will no longer be what I was."
A tear escaped from as he turned toward the tunnel. "So be it."
He looked at the Unicorns and shrugged. They nodded their heads, and closed the door behind Brian. Then they approached me. I looked for a way out. There was none. I didn't know how to open the door, and I could not bite them. My jaw would not clamp around anything. I looked frantically around as the two Unicorns approached me.
"No! Leave me alone! Don't you dare touch me!" I screeched, running in circles.
The Unicorns only walked, approaching me from different angles. Suddenly, a scream was heard outside. The observation mirror broke and in tumbled a Dragon. It quickly stood and slashed the stunned Unicorns. Both put up a weak defense and were soon laying on the ground, blood streaming from their legs. The Dragon ran to me and picked me up. He held me close for a moment and set me down. It was Clyte! I gasped when I saw his face, but he only smiled. He ran for the broken mirror and jumped through. I followed along, gasping for breath because he ran faster. I jumped into the air once we were clear of the tunnel, and Clyte caught my tail. He pulled me back to the ground.
"Not yet," he half whispered as he passed me.
I scrambled to my feet and ran after him. We ran through another tunnel and came to two huge doors. He screamed and the doors opened. We ran out, and the Dragons that had opened the doors fled for their caves. We jumped into the air and flew back to the Main Room.
Clyte's guards flew into the room with the silver bridle. Clyte held up one scaly hand and shook his head. The guards looked at him confused, but obeyed and set the bridle back on its hook. Clyte motioned me to follow him. I followed him into a beautiful room. It had rabbit fur carpets, deer skins on a wool mattress, and lots of meat. I ran to the meat and looked back at Clyte.
"All yours. If you choose to stay with us."
"Yeah, I'll stay. I can't bear to be away from here," I told him.
Clyte smiled and walked out, closing the wooden door behind him. I wolfed the meat down and gulped the water in a nearby cup. I ran and jumped on my bed. It was wonderfully soft. I covered myself with beaver skin and pulled it up to my chin. I slept for a few hours.
I woke and heard a voice. I looked around the room, but there was no one in the room.
"Hello?" My voice echoed in my room.
I looked down and found myself human.
"What's going on?"
"Don't you remember yourself?" asked an eery voice that echoed throughout the room.
"This is not me!"
"It was you! Don't you remember, Princess? Don't you remember?"
I shook my head, and the voice started to fade. "Don't go! Tell me what's going on!"
"You don't believe in humans. You cannot hear me if I no longer exist in your mind..."
The voice faded out, and I jumped out of my bed.
I awoke.
"What in the world?"
I was back to Dragon. I quickly changed to human and checked my door knob. The door wasn't locked, so I quietly slipped out, shutting the door behind me. I ran, turned right, and ran toward the small door. I opened it and crept in. Every dog was sleeping. I quickly changed to Dragon and walked down the hall. My footsteps would have echoed if the dogs hadn't been there. I walked quickly and eventually reached the small door at the end. I opened that door and walked through the room with the full grown Unicorns. They all stood straight and bowed when I walked past. I found it strange at the time, but I shrugged it off. I opened the next door and walked through the room with the small Unicorns. They were still playing, which I found odd for the time of night. I finally came to the little door at the end of the room. I reached my hand into the air, and a key fell into my palm. I gripped the key and quietly stuck it in the key hole. I twisted it, and the door unlocked. I opened the door, took the key out, and lifted my hand to the air. The key disappeared, and I walked into the room. Quietly, I closed the door behind me. I spotted the Lock Ness monster sleeping against the left wall. I changed to human and talked to it.
"Lock Ness, I have changed."
He slowly opened one eye, and gave it time to get adjusted to the dim light of the room. Then he looked at me and appeared startled. "What do you mean, when you say changed?"
I quickly whispered,"I am now with the Dragons. I can stay with any and all of you as long as I want from now on!"
The Lock Ness eyed me carefully and sighed. "That is not good. I liked you Princess, because of your sweetness. Because of your bravery and because you were stubborn. Please, do not turn over to our side. It will only make you weak, like me." He sighed, and shook his head.
I glared at him and exclaimed,"Fine then! Be that way. At least I belong somewhere. At least I know where I'm supposed to be."
I stormed out of his room and walked into the Werewolves room. They jumped at me, but this time I didn't flinch, let alone jump. Each and every one jerked back in surprise and made a little path for me.
"What are you doing here, Princess? Why are you here? Shouldn't you be sleeping? What's wrong, Princess?"
Dozens of questions were tossed at me from all directions.
"Quiet!" I yelled.
Every Werewolf was obviously startled, but they got my point.
I looked at them and said,"Shall we talk?"
They studied me. Each and everyone studied me. I turned around, and saw them eyeing me. Up and down, their eyes went, up and down.
"What?! I'm not your dinner!"
Suddenly, in unison, they shook their heads. They began to chant while shaking their heads. "You are not a friend. You are not a friend! You are not a friend!! You have changed. You are not a friend. You have changed! You are not a friend!"
I looked at them in disbelief and yelled above the noise,"But I am! I belong to this cave. I am a Dragon!"
They kept shaking their heads and singing. I ran through them. I had to shove and push, because they did not part for me. I ran to the door and swung it open. I shut it behind me, gasping for breath. The Treons were in this room.
"Ungrateful! You are ungrateful! We know what you have done! You have joined the Dragons! Give us our meat. Give us our meat!"
I ran past them and to the next door. I jerked it open and slammed it behind me. The huge Cyclops knelt down and stretched his arm and hand towards me. "Hello, friend!"
He was so nice, and yet he was irritating.
I yelled,"I'm not your friend!"
The Cyclops jerked his hand back and a tear slid down his cheek. I looked around desperately and ran for the next door. I ran into the next room, barely able to keep myself from breaking into an angry rage. The little Clarques ran to me.
"Poor Princess! Poor Princess!"
The Clarques sang over and over again. I looked at them and quickly scanned the room for the door. I found it and ran to it. They ran after me, still singing. I opened it, ran through, and slammed it harder than the last door. I sighed, then shivered. It was snowy. Abom looked down at me.
"You are now as cold as me."
He glared as he said it and made me shiver. He made me shiver, not the snow or cold weather. I ran across the snowy land and yanked the door open. The room was empty, since the Griffins were gone. I walked to the last door and opened it. I ran out into the Main Room and quietly shut the door. I ran for my room and opened the door quietly as well. I got in and closed the door. I ran to my bed and wept.
