If you've rented a movie and are returning it late, walk into the store when it's busiest and simply place it on a shelf, preferably behind other movies. When they do their weekly tape audit, they will find it and mark in the computer system that it was FOS (Found on Shelf). The next time you rent, explain that you returned the tape on time, and, since they found it in the store, they will assume it was an employee error and remove the late charge from your account.
