Dog mushing was and still is used for transportation. Mushing was used by the Northern American natives' culture and survival. Some northern Americans include the Inuit, Eskimo, and Indians. Dog mushing was used for transportation and work, but later as the days went by, races began and rules were established.
In the 1920's, airplanes started taking over dog mushing. But in1925, they proved that dog mushing still can be used for transportation. In 1925, an outbreak of diphtheria threatened the people who had it, so dog mushing was used to get the medicine.
