Descendants of John "Raccoon" Miller

1. John "Raccoon" Miller, son of John Miller, was born in 1747 in Newberry County, South Carolina, died on 25 Aug 1832 in Knox County, Tennessee at age 85, and was buried in Maynardville, Union County, Tennessee.

General Notes: Sometime before his death, Alfred Miller, son of Jacob and Lucinda Sharp Miller, and grand son of John "Raccoon" and Eve Weidner (Whitner) Miller, wrote a history of the Miller famil y for the benefit of his own family and this compiler is using this as a basis for the histor y of the "Raccoon" Miller family.

Some of the descendants of "Raccoon" Miller believe that he was born about 1749, and accor ding to his grandson, Alfred Miller, he came from Newberry County, South Carolina, and was on e of 4 children, the other 3 being girls. It has been said that Rebecca, wife of pioneer Jame s Rice, who came from South Carolina and settled in Anderson County, Tenn., before 1800, ma y have been a sister of "Raccoon" Miller. To the best of this compiler's knowledge, this poin t has never been proved.

Alfred Miller stated that "Raccoon" married a German girl named Eve Weidner (b. Jan. 31, 1 751; d. Aug. 12, 1853, at the age of 102 years), and settled first in what was Hawkins County , Tenn. He was called "Raccoon" in order to distinguish him from another John Miller, no rela tion, living in what later became Knox County. That "Raccoon" did settle in Hawkins County i s evidence by the following records furnished by W.H. Thomas (now deceased), of Athens, Tenn.

From the Knoxville Gazette, June 16, 1792:

"Capt. John Miller of Hawkins County last year made the first attempt ever heard of in thi s territory of raising the silkworm. From a small stock he raised nearly five million worms a nd during the first year of the project they produced 20 pounds of raw silk."

Records indicate that "Raccoon" Miller was in what is now Hawkins County as early as 1777.

Knox County, Tenn., was formed in 1792 from parts of Hawkins and Greene Counties. Judgin g from the above record, John and Eve Miller sold their property on Possum Creek, Hawkins Cou nty, in 1793 and settled in that part of Knox County which later became known as "Raccoon Val ley".

The following information was copied from a letter from the Veterans Administration, Washi ngton D.C., dated July 16, 1936, to a descendant with regard to the military service (R-7187 ) of John "Raccoon" Miller in the Revolutionary War and is on file at the DAR Library in Wash ington D.C.

The date and place of birth of John Miller and names of his parents are not known. He die d Aug 25, 1832, in Knox County, Tenn.,, at the age of 85 and for the last 40 years a citize n of Knox County.

John Miller married sometime in 1776 (Note: From the application of a descendant of John M iller who became a member of the DAR, it was learned that the marriage date of John Miller t o Eve Whitener was Mar. 1, 1776, in Sullivan County and that Eve Whitener was born Jan. 31, 1 751), The date and place of birth and names of her parents are not shown.

"Raccoon" Miller was a captain in the Indian Wars. While away on a campaign, he left his w ife at home with three small children. A female dog, obviously scenting trouble, brought he r puppies from the barn (straw stack) to the house. She barked toward the hill where they lea rned later that Indians lurked in ambush. That night Lucy (Eve) Miller barred the door and fi xed the guns. When the Indians attacked the house, the dog attacked them, dragging one unde r the house. The Indians fled and were later tracked to the Clinch River by a trail of blood.

"Raccoon" Miller sold the present site of Middlesboro, Kentucky, for a jug of corn whiskey ."

Shannon Anderson et al owned land 6 miles north of Knoxville on the Knoxville-Tazewell Pik e, a tract of over 1,000 acres. He traded this to Raccoon Miller for a rifle, a rooster an d a bull.

Raccoon Miller was a mason, a member of the Rogersville Lodge. He was a farmer, a stock tr ader and hunter. He was about 6 feet tall, medium build, had red hair, blue eyes and a flori d complexion. He had considerable reputation as a fighter, and loved a scuffle.

Raccoon ordered a clock from England at a cost of $125. It was 9 feet tall and is now in C hattanooga in the possession of descendants of Fulton Miller.

Parents: Names not mentioned. Birth date and place not shown. Family: Veteran married Eva Whi tener in 1776

The day and month of year and place of their marriage are not shown. In 1851, Eva Miller , widow of the veteran, was residing in Knox County, Tennessee, at which time she stated tha t she was "aged one hundred years and six months." Reference is made in 1852 to Polly, oldes t child of the veteran, who, if then living, would have been 69 years of age. The date of dea th is not shown. The following named children were then living:

Lewis Miller, Jacob Miller, Isaac Miller, Nancy Loy, Elizabeth Graves, and Rachel Cox (Joh n Miller, Jr., the oldest son, died in 1843). All of the children except Isaac were living i n either Knox or Anderson County, Tennessee.

In 1851, one Jacob Miller, a resident of Knox County, Tennessee, stated that he had been a cquainted with the veteran and his widow, Eva Miller; his relationship to the veteran was no t given. In 1852 one Lewis Miller was about 55 years of age and was a resident of Anderson Co unty, Tennessee. The record shows that Eva Miller died August 2, 1853.

When the veteran's widow, Eva Miller, applied for a pension, she stated that the veteran s erved as Captain with Virginia troops under Colonel Joseph Martin. The date and place of enli stment were not given. No pension was granted the widow, Eva Miller. The writer believes tha t John Miller lived in Washington County, Virginia, at the time of his Revolutionary War serv ice.

Information from W.H. Thomas of Athens, Tennessee:

Among the signers of a petition from Washington County, Virginia, November 6th, 1777, prot esting the location of the courthouse were John Miller...at that date, Carters Valley was tho ught to be a part of Virginia.

"Hawkins County, the sixth in order of creation in Tennessee, was created January 6, 1787 , out of Sullivan County by an act of the North Carolina general assembly. Sullivan County ha d been formed in 1779 from Washington County.

"Hawkins County was organized at the house of Thomas Gibbons on June 4, 1787, about six mi les from the present county seat, Rogersville. The following officials were elected: John Hun t, Sheriff; Thomas Hutchings, Clerk; William Marshall, register; Joseph McCullah, surveyor; a nd Nathaniel Henderson, coroner. In the founding act commissioners named to locate a place fo r the courthouse and prison were: Lewis Widener, John Miller, Hutson Johnson, Francis Doherty , Joseph Cloud, William Reid, and John Carns. They reported and recommended that the courthou se, prison, and stocks be built at "Joseph Rogers" on Crockett Creek. This became the town o f Rogersville, incorporated by the North Carolina general assembly on December 22, 1789.

Ludwig Weidner, "Lewis Whitener," was the father-in-law of John Miller.

This indenture - made this 4th day of March, 1793 between John Miller of Hawkins County, U nited States Territory South of the Ohio River of the first part and John Weaver of Hawkins C ounty of the Territory of the the United States South of the Ohio River of the other part, wi tnessed and sd, John Miller for and in consideration of...200 pounds to him in hand paid th e receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, hath by these presents doth grant, bargain et...unt o John Weaver his heirs...in a tract of land containing 150 acres more or less lying and bein g in Hawkins County on the waters of Possum Creek. Since John Miller's wife, Eva, was a daughter of Lewis Whitener (Ludwig Weidner), it may n ot be out of order to enter some notes about this German immigrant. Ludwig Weidner is beli eved to have been born in Germany about 1725. He arrived in Pennsylvania Colony in 1747. Th e following was taken from Pennsylvania German Pioneers, by Strossburger Hink, Vol 1, page 36 4: "(list 112C) at the courthouse at Philadelphia, August 1747. "Present: The Honorabl e Anthony Palmer, Esq., President Thomas Hopkins, Esquire. "The foreigners whose names ar e underwritten imported in the 'Bilander Vermont' from Rotterdam and last from Lieth in Scotl and. Thomas Ricks, Master, did this day take the following oaths to the Government." Ludwi g Weidner was one of the 112 person listed. No other person by this name could be found in th e set of books consisting of three volumes. Bilander means a sailing ship having two masts. T he writer does not know where or whom Ludwig married. He married in the Colonies, for no othe r Weidner was among the persons who arrived on the ship. Ludwig Weidner "Lewis Whitener" d ied in Grainger County, Tennessee, in the vicinity of the present (1962) Luttrell, Union Coun ty. John Sawyers, a Revolutionary War veteran who lived in Knox County, Tennessee, near the p resent Coryton, was executor of his will. (see notes of Lewis Widener)

"Helen Topping Miller jotted down recollections of her relative Alfred Miller, grandson o f Capt. John Miller. In these notes she says that the father of "Raccoon" John Miller was a J ohn Miller who came from Britain to Newberry County, S.C. that the first John Miller was kill ed in the "Mecklenburg uprising." I surmise that he was among the Regulators of Herman Husban d and Ninian Bell Hableton on May 16, 1771, and was slain at Alamance. Captain Miller settle d some two or three miles down Raccoon Valley below Maynardville and Alexander Hambleton sett led two miles above Maynardville in the same valley, and Jacob Cox settled about six miles be low John Miller at Holmack's Station or Bull Run Blockhouse, the fort being near the plantati on of the late Haywood Stanley. The D.A.R. desire to mark the site of Holmack's Station, bu t I am of little help in identifying the exact site.

From the Knox County, Tennessee, Register of Deeds Office:

"To John Miller from Stockley Donaldson 1000 acres 500 pounds February 17, 1794," W.D. Boo k A-1, page 214. This land was in Raccoon Valley, and the description named no adjoining lan d owner. On May 22, 1797, John Miller bought 600 acres on Raccoon Creek from Stockley Donalds on, W.D. Book C2 VI, page 162. This made 1600 acres that John Miller owned in Knox County bef ore 1800.

John Miller paid taxes on 1076 acres of land in Knox County in 1806 He did not pay a pol l tax, but paid three black polls. This may be verified by examining page 84, East Tennesse e Historical Publication, No. 26, 1954.

John Miller was commissioned captain of Knox County, Tennessee, Militia by Governor John S evier, October 10, 1796, John Sevier Journal, page 29.

Anderson County, Tennessee, Court Minutes, 1801-1809: Tuesday June 15, 1802

Ordered that the following persons are appointed a jury of view to lay off a road from an d near the Block House on the road leading up the big Valley by Captain John Miller the neare st and best way to Clouds Ford on Clinch River, thence across the river to where it will inte rsect the road from Knoxville across Clinch River Near to Grantsborough into Powells Valley . Grantsborough and the roads are shown on the 1832 map of Tennessee.

LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF JOHN MILLER

I, John Miller of Raccoon Valley County of Knox and State of Tennessee hereby make my las t will and testament in the manner and form following that is to say--

1st That out of my money if on hand, if none there be so much of my perishable estate as ma y answer, be sold as will pay all my just debts and funeral expenses should the within be req uired; but no more, than will be required to pay as stipulated whatsoever it be.

2nd To my son John Miller I give and bequeath the tract of land exchanged with my son, Isaa c Miller containing one hundred and fifty acres, I also give him one hundred and fifty acre s more, adjoining the same with the privilege of the Raccoon Spring, also a piece of land whi ch he sold to Iontons Rutherford the quantity of acres not ascertained. Likewise one negro bo y named Cain, which he has sold. One negro woman named Lydia and negro boy named Lias which h e has now in possession.

3rd To my daughter Nancy Loy now in her possession four Negroes, namely Row, Alexander, Rache l and Kipsey, and after my decease one negro man named Joseph, without I see cause to give hi m up before.

4th To my son Isaac Miller, I give and bequeath all the lands now in his possession the quant ity not know, also at my decease one negro woman, named Lea and one negro boy named Tony, an d the above named Lee and Toney he has sold.

5th To my son Lewis Miller, I give and bequeath the tract of land purchased of Masingale, con taining two hundred acres, also a small tract of land he purchased of his brother John Mille r adjoining of the same, also a tract of land adjoining the land of Isaac Miller where he no w lives unto the dividing line between me and John Loy, also two Negroes now in his possessio n name Tony and Sarah, and at my decease one negro boy named Frank and the set of Blacksmit h tools.

6th To my son, Jacob Miller I give and bequeath after my decease the tract of land I now liv e on containing six hundred acres, likewise on tract of land containing one hundred and thirt y acres, seven Negroes namely Phil, Poll, Edy, Mary, Matt, Alexander, Anacce now in his posse ssion, likewise at my decease, all the houshold and kitchen furniture, Viz, one clock one cup board one table, one bedstead bed and furniture and one wagon and hind gears for care on acco unt of his maintaining his mother, decently during her life time or widowhood.

7th To my daughter Elizabeth Graves I give and bequeath three hundred acres of land now in h er possession also five Negroes namely Morice, Mary George Nicholas and Malinda which she ha s in her possession, also at my decease one negro boy named named George to her and her bodil y heirs forever and all their future increase.

8th To my daughter, Rachel Cox, I give and bequeath two hundred and seventy acres of land no w in her possession also three Negroes now in her possession named Hannah, Malinda and Emil y and further at my decease, I give and bequeath to her one negro named Author.

9th To my beloved wife I bequeath one negro girl named Lucy, to attend and wait on her durin g her life or widowhood, and at her decease the price of said negro to be equally divided amo ng my above named children.

10th And further will that one negro girl named Ibby be equally divided among the above name d children.

11th It is my desire further in addition to the other bequest the stock after my decease of e very kind whatsoever namely Horses, Mules, Cows, Hogs and Sheep and one still be equally divi ded among my children, or to be sold and proceeds thereof - equally divided among the above n amed children, but should my beloved wife think it necessary and she first to be counted befo re such division. She shall have two cows some hogs and sheep with one mare bridle and saddl e for her sole use if she requires the same.

12th And lastly, I do hereby constitute and appoint my friend Isaac Miller and Lewis Miller e xecutors of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all other and former wills or te staments heretofore made.

Affidavit of Lewis Miller, dated Sept. 2, 1852, of Anderson County, Tenn.,that he was we ll acquainted with Eva Miller of Knox County and was well acqainted with her husband for 20 y ears before his death Aug. 25, 1832; that the said John Miller, dec., had and kept during hi s life a family record in his large Bible and the affiant has often seen the said record an d said record was in the handwriting of Barthy Rainey. According to the record, the birth o f their oldest child, whose name was Polly, if she was now living would be 69 years old (b. 1 783). The Bible was sold at the sale of said John Miller's property after his death and purch ased by one Harmon Condry, who has since removed from this county and carried with him said B ible and record to parts unknown to this affiant. That for 50 years past John Miller was reco gnized and known as a Captain. Had heard John Miller say he had served in the Revolution a s a Captain and after the Act of Congress of Jun 7, 1832, this affiant was at said John Mille r's and heard him say that he was entitled to a pension under said law and that he was goin g to Knoxville to employ counsel to procure said pension for him; he further stated that sai d Miller told him he had found his discharge and saw said Miller have a paper in his hand tha t the said Miller said was his discharge. He further stated that said Miller went to Knoxvill e and shortly after his return was taken down sick and died in a short time without filing an y declaration and affiant does not know what became of said military discharge but suppose h e left it with his counsel. Affiant further stated that he had made diligent search through s aid Miller's old papers for said discharge but could not find it. /s/ Lewis Miller Don & Scharmal Conley took photo of the tombstone of John "Raccoon" Miller in Ousley Cemeter y, Maynardville, Union County, Tennessee in 1996. There are 2 markers on his grave which read : (1) John (Raccoon) Miller, Born 1747, died Aug 25, 1832. (2) John Miller, North Carolina, S gt Porters Co NC Reg, Revolutionary War 1747-1832.

• He was described as 6ft, med build, red hair, blue eyes and floried complexion.

John married Eva Weidner, daughter of Ludwig Weidner and Barbery, on 1 Mar 1776 in Sullivan County, Tennessee. Eva was born on 31 Jan 1751 in Virginia and died on 12 Aug 1853 in Union County, Tennessee at age 102.

+ 6 F v. Elizabeth Miller was born on 9 Apr 1799 in Tennessee, died on 15 Oct 1870 in Jersey County, Illinois at age 71, and was buried in Greene County, Illinois.

+ 8 M vii. Isaac Miller was born on 12 May 1791 and died on 3 Mar 1878 at age 86.

General Notes: The wife of Daniel Graves was Sophia Clapp. Their son Henry was born Sept. 2, 1796, Knox C ounty, Tennessee. On July 15, 1819, he married Elizabeth Miller, born Apr 1, 1799 (Said to have been a twin of Jacob Miller) in Tennessee, daughter of John "Raccoon" Miller. The marriage date of Henry Graves to Elizabeth Miller was given as July 5, 1819 (license), but in his application for a pension for service in the War of 1812, Henry gave his marriage date as July 15, which no doubt was correct.
When Henry Graves applied for a pension on March 11, 1871, he was a resident of Jersey Co unty, Illinois - Jerseyville Precinct. He gave his age as 74 and stated that he enlisted in Capt. Jones' Company, 39th Regiment, Williams Brigade, "Regulars" division, at Knoxville, Tenn ., in November 1814 and was discharged at Fort Hawkins, Georgia, in November 1815. At the time of his enlistment his personal description was 5'8"; blue eyes, dark hair; fair complexion ; age 18; farmer, born in Knox County and was enlisted Nov 15, 1814, by Ens. A. Dearing for 5 years. In his military papers he was referred to as "Musician" and in an affidavit made by him on Aug 18, 1843--then a resident of Anderson County, Tenn.--he stated that he was a Drummer in the company commanded by Capt. Jones of the 39th U.S. Infantry.
In his pension application, Henry stated that he was married; that his wife's name was Elizabeth Miller and that they were married in Knox County, Tenn., on the 15th day of July 1819 . He also stated that his post office was 4 miles northeast of Kane, Greene County, Ill. His application was attested by John J. Ballard, a son in law, who had married Henry's daughter Livana in Knox County, Tenn., Mar. 18, 1851. Henry was paid a pension of $8 per month to Sept. 4, 1876, when he was dropped. According to the records of descendants, Henry died Nov. 29 , 1876, in Jersey County, and his wife--Elizabeth Miller Graves--died Oct 15, 1870 and both were buried in a small family plot in Greene County, Ill. Conley's have Death Certificate of Mahala Pearl Graves and it says her father was Henry Grave s, that she was born in Tennessee, her father born in Virginia (census says he was born in Te nnessee), Her mother's birth place unknown. She died of Pluro Pneumonia and face cancer. Th e informant on the death certificate is J. D. Graves.

Note that Mahala Pearl Graves has the same maiden name as her husband. They are lst cousins , 1 generation removed.

DEATH OF AN AGED CASS COUNTY LADY

From Thursday's daily. - Last evening at the home of J.D. Graves, at Peru, Nebraska, occurre d the death of Mrs. Mahala P. Graves or "Grandma" Graves, as she was better known to the ol d neighbors and friends in Cass County. This venerable lady whose years of life lacked but tw o brief years of a full century, is one of the last of the pioneers who assisted in making th is community what it is today, as she with her husband came here at a very early day and by h ard work and perseverance made a home for the family along the bluffs of the mighty Missour i near the old town of Rock Bluffs, and the old homestead still stands as a monument to the w orthy pioneer couple the last of whom has now answered the summons of the Master to her las t long rest.
In the past few years Mrs. Graves has been failing in health and has made her home wit h her son, J.D. Graves at Peru, and just a short time ago enjoyed the privilege of having th e children gather with her in what destined to be the last reunion of the family upon earth.
Mrs Mahala P. Graves was born in Knox County, East Tennessee, September 24, 1821, and w as married in that state to William W. Graves on October 2, 1837. Mr. and Mrs. Graves remove d from Tennessee to Iowa in 1852, pre-empting a quarter section of land three miles east of G lenwood. Here the family resided until 1864, when they moved to the new state of Nebraska, an d settled near the then flourishing town of Rock Bluffs. Here they saw the community in whic h they lived pass from a flourishing community of several hundred population to a mere collec tion of empty stores, as monuments of past granduer; the country which at the time of their c oming was but scarcely known aside from the few settlements along the river grow into one o f the greatest agricultural empires of the world. It was given this venerable lady to see thr ee times the nation take up the gage of battle and two of these conflicts were the greatest t hat the world has ever known, the great strive of state against nation and of the greatest re public of the world against the greatest empire of the world.
It is wonderful to contemplate the changes that this worthy lady has seen develop durin g her years of life and fitting that as the peace long prayed for came to the world her spiri t should pass on giving her the peace and calm that comes at the close of her life. The Grave s family resided at Rock Bluffs up until a few years ago and there on October 6, 1895, the hu sband and father was called home to rest. Since the death of the husband, Mrs Graves has resi ded with the children. Twelve children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Graves as follows: A.J. Grav es. deceased; J.D. Graves, Peru, Neb., Mrs Harriett Miller, Glenwood, Ia., A.N. Graves, Murra y, Neb., C.M. Graves and E.L. Graves, North Yakima, Washington, Mary E. Burnett, Rock Bluffs ; A.S. Graves, Brooklyn, N.Y., Charles L. Graves, Union, Nebraska, Mrs. Ellen O. Lacy, Omaha , deceased, one child died in infancy and Orlena Graves died in Cass County in 1865, aged 1 9 years. Funeral announcement of this venerable pioneer will be made later.

WILLIAM WILLARD GRAVES

William W. Graves, deceased was born in Knox County, East Tennessee, July 19, 1818, wa s married to Mahala P. Graves, October 2nd. 1837, she being born in the same county and state , September 22, 1821. They, with six children, moved by wagon to Mills County, Ia., in the au tumn of 1852. They arrived at Elmwood December 2nd, 1852. From Elmwood they moved to Missour i September, 1858, thence to Plattsmouth in the spring of 1863. He resided in Nebraska sinc e that date until the time of his death--April 6, 1895. The deceased has always been est eemed a worthy citizen wherever he has lived. He and his wife joined the Baptist Church in 18 44, lived in that faith until they came west. Churches being scarce in those days, they did n ot attach themselves to any church until 1872, when he joined the Christian Church in which h e has lived a faithful life ever since and died in the triumphs of a living faith. He ca lled the ten living children to his bed instantly before he departed, and gave them good advi ce. After living a married life fifty-eight years, he dies leaving his wife and ten children- two preceded him to the better world. ANDREW J. GRAVES

Born October 26, 1826, in Knox County, Tennessee. Died at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 2 , 1902, at his home in Norborne, Missouri.
Deceased was known to may of the citizens of this village, having spent the summer of 1 899 here with his daughter, Mrs. C.L Graves. He left his native state in 1852 and located i n Fremont county, Iowa where he married Isabelle Watkins, whose death occurred six years ago . The past two years his health has been failing, and for a few weeks his condition was quit e serious, resulting in death Wednesday morning. The funeral was held yesterday at Norborne.
Deceased leaves one son and three daughters, Robert H Graves and Mrs. Jacob Schaffer o f Norborne, Mo., Mrs Luther Fox of Hamburg, Iowa, and Mrs C.L. Graves of Union.(newspaper unk nown)

MRS. MILLER DIES SUDDENLY Mrs. Harriet Miller, aged 87 Falls Asleep i n Rocker at Her Home. Funeral Service Were Held This Thursday Morning.

The death angel quietly stole over the threshold and claimed the spirit of Mrs. Harrie t Miller, aged pioneer as she sat in her rocker in the family home east of Glenwood Tuesday m orning. Mrs Miller who was in her 87th year had been enjoying usual good health and the new s of her death came as a shock to her many friends. Her daughter, Etta and Pearl with whom sh e made her home on the family homestead where they have lived so long were busy about the hou sehold duties. Their mother arose late, as was her custom, remarking however that her breakfa st did not taste as good as usual and after eating but little returned to her rocker in the l iving room in which she fell asleep to awaken no more in this mortal sphere
Mrs. Miller was the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William W. Graves and was born in Kn ox County, Tennessee, November 22, 1838. She was the oldest of eleven children, two sisters a nd one brother having preceded her in death and six brothers and one sister survive her. Sh e came here with her family from Tennessee in 1852. She was united in marriage with Joseph M . Miller November 14, 1861 and suffered all the pangs of a wife whose husband was exposed t o shot and shell while battling for his cause in the great Civil War. There was born to her t hree sons and two daughters, the sons dying in infancy. Mrs. Miller united with the Meth odist church in her young womanhood and remained a faithful member till her death. As a wife , mother and friend there were none more devoted than she. Her time was given completely to h er family affairs rather than to public matter as she found her greatest enjoyment in the ser vice she rendered for her loved ones within her family circle. Hers was a long useful life wh ich came as beautifully and peacefully to the end of its earthly day as do the shades of twil ight fade gradually from the glow of crimson and gold to the somber hues of dusk. Such live s remind us that beyond the night there in the dawn of another day which we like to believe b rings with it reunion of broken family ties.
The sister Mary E. Burnett of Omaha and six brothers, A. H. Graves, Murray, Neb., C. M . Graves and E.L. Graves of Yakima, Wash., J.D. Graves, Peru, Neb., A.S. Graves, Washington a nd C.L. Graves, Union, Neb., together with her two daughters, Etta and Pearl are left to mour n her passing. Funeral services were held from the home at 10 O'Clock Thursday morning, her p astor, Rev. J.H. Augu st 13, 1862, he enlisted in the twenty-ninth Iowa Company B, and was in the battles of Helena , Little Rock, Saline River, Spanish Fork, and taking of Mobile. He was married to Miss Harri et E. Graves, a native of Knox Co. Tenn. born Nov 22, 1838. She came to this country in 1852 . They are parents of six children, two living: Marietta and Ada Pearl. The farm of Mr Mille r contains 160 acres. What has been said of other old residents of the county is equally tru e of him, and need not be repeated here.

Joseph Miller died at farm home east of county farm, buried in Glenwood, Iowa. Prec eded in death by all 3 sons, Joseph L., William H., Charles H. Survivors; Wife Harriet, daugh ters Maretta W & Ada Pearl, at home. His father came from Tennessee, mother from Virgini a. Joseph came with father and family to Mills Co., Iowa in 1853, located on what is now th e county farm. Enlisted 13 Aug 1862 in Co. Death of Mrs Arminda Graves Pioneer Woman Dies at ripe age of ninety years at home here afte r a short illness. This afternoon at 1:30, Mrs Arminda Graves, 90, one of the oldest resident s of Cass Co., died at her home in this city where for several days she has been in very crit ical condition.

Taken ill sometime ago Mrs. Graves has fought bravely against the illnss but at her great ag e was unable to stand the long ordeal of the sickness.

The life of Mrs. Graves and her husband, the late Alexander H. Graves, is a part of the stor y of Cass County as they were members of pioneer families that helped to carve out homes in t he new country of the west and where they were for many years active figures.

Arminda J. Boemer was born in the state of Arkansas and when a girl came to Mills Co., Iowa , in 1865, her parents settling near Glenwood and where on June 22, 1865 she married to Alexa nder H. Graves. They moved to Cass County shortly after their marriage and have since reside d here until the end of life's long journey. For a great many years the family engaged in farming but in later years moved to Murray wher e Mr. Graves died several years ago and since which time the wife has made her home in Platts mouth for the greater part of the time. She is survived by three sons and two daughters. J.H. Graves of this city, George and Edwar d Graves of Peru, Mrs F.E. Vallery of Omaha and Mrs Bert Crawford of Oregon. There are a larg e number of grandchildren and great grandchildren surviving. She was preceded in death by husband and two daughters. Mrs Grace Baxter and Mrs Iva Churchil l. At the age of 8 years he moved to Iowa. When 18 years old he enlisted in the Indian war, Au g 13, 1862, at Glenwood, Iowa, Silver Creek Township, Mills, County. Was in Co. B. 29th Infan try. Report of Colonel H.C. Hunt, Council Bluffs, to Governor Kirkwood about Indian trouble v erifies the fact that the organization was in service in Souix City, Iowa. He moved to Nebras ka for a short time. In 1898 he moved to Bickleton, Washington, where he Homesteaded for farm ing of dry wheat. In 1890 he became a minister of the Methodist Church. His trades were carpe nter, brick mason, farmer and minister. He married Jan 17, 1866 to Milissa Jane Shaffer, bor n Jan 17, 1850, she died June 27, 1915.

Elbert Graves was the first postmaster of Blu e Light, Washington, the Post Office being located in his home, where he Homesteaded 160 acre s; So. West Qt. sec. 34, twp 7, rg 21, Yakima County, Washington, for dry land wheat farming . Sometime between 1904 and 1907 they moved to Puyallup, Washington where he worked in a sawm ill. He returned to Yakima County in 1909. Returned to Yakima in 1910, Purchased two lots i n Hillcrest Addition and built a two story, three bedroom home. He owned and operated two gro cery stores, one near So. 2nd, Ave, in 1917. Other occupations were mason by trade, photograp her, carpenter and farmer. At various times after returning to Yakima he worked for farmers n ear home, in fruit orchards. After the death of his first wife, Ella, his son John William Gr aves remained with him until he married in 1922. For a short time in 1921 he shared his hom e with his daughter, Mary Evangeline Graves Williams, (Vangie) and her family. Moving from th ere to North 5th Ave he remained with Vangie until he remarried. Through some friends he beca me acquainted with his second wife, Sitha Jane (Waits) Moore and married November 24, 1922. I n 1923 he sold his home on Tieton Drive and purchased a grocery store with living quarters a t 501 Cherry Ave., Yakima, Washington which he operated until he passed away May 21, 1927 o f a stroke. He and his wife Ella were both baptized October 25, 1894 in the Baptist Church. E lbert was known to be a very hard worker, good to his wife and family, an excellent swimmer a nd diver, known to have swam across the Missouri river on his back. Tragically he found his s ister's child drowned in a creek. His parting words to me were always, "don't go near the wat er". He had a double set of teeth on his lower jaw. He died May 21, 1927 at home in Yakima, W ashington and was buried beside his wife Ella, May 24, 1927 in Tahoma Cemetery, Yakima, Washi ngton. Elbert also had a sawmill in the Wenas, about 25 miles north west of Selah, Washington . Elbert had a bad eye and also a double goiter. (both sides of the neck)

Elber t Lossen Graves spent some important years of his life in towns that are no longer marked o n any map. Born on June 22, 1848, Knox County Tennessee, Graves married Ella Agnes Phoeb e Carrell (sister of Elisha Simpson Carrell) on November 23, 1871, in a town called Sonora, M issouri. That scene of his marriage is no longer seen on any map. Neither is Bluelight , a town near Bickleton, Washington, where Graves served as the first postmaster. All that i s left of the small community is the old Graves home and a good share of memories tucked awa y in the minds of Bluelight's former residents. After Graves and his new bride eloped, t hey lived for a while in Rock Bluffs, Nebraska. With their seven children, they settled in th e Bickleton area about 1900. The bricklayer, mason, photographer and carpenter accepted the j ob of postmaster for the community, which was as yet un-named. One story of how Blueligh t got its name went like this: Realizing that the collection of a general store, livery stabl e, blacksmith shop and butcher shop had to be named in order to qualify for a post office, Gr aves and a man named Ed Gleason put their heads together. It was Gleason's idea to name the n ot-quite town after the blue glow (from lamps) he saw in the night when returning from church . So Bluelight it was, however short-lived. Being a fun loving sort, Graves himself buil t a dance hall in the tiny town. Lumber to build the entertainment center was hauled by bobsl ed. Elbert Graves held the position of postmaster until 1904 when he turned the duties o ver to his niece, Nellie Graves Carrell (Uncle Wilber Carrell's wife). This versatile man's n ext job was with a Puyallup sawmill.(town up near Seattle). He established a sawmill of his o wn located in the Wenas upon returning to the Valley in 1908. Although business venture s were not usually shared by men and their wives, Graves operated a merry-go-round on South S econd Street; and Mrs Graves (daughters Vangie and Lulu) painted the horses and took tickets . Long afterwards he would buy whole strings of merry-go-round tickets so his granddaughter A ddie (Rhodes) could ride the wooden horses at the state fair. (Merry-go-round at Bickleton Pi oneer Picnic at Cleveland was restored by Joy T. Carrell) In 1910, Graves moved to Yakim a after purchasing property on the corner of 17th and Teiton Drive. He and his wife lived i n a two-story home he built there. His daughter and her family lived next door. At this time , he was operating a small store located on the corner of Second and Yakima avenues, right ne xt to a Chinese restaurant. He and his wife and son John shared the store keeping respon sibilities, stocking mainly staple goods since they had no refrigeration. They sold vinegar f rom barrels and many kinds of penny candy. Granddaughter Addie Rhodes hasn't forgotten t he penny candy days of Grandad's store. All day suckers and licorice whips sold for a cent. M any times she asked for "bacon", a flat red and white stripped coconut candy. She had suc h a yearning for the pink soda pop, but "they couldn't afford to buy it." Although thrif ty Grandpa Graves continued to walk to his store to save the 10 cent street car fare, his son -in-law Elmer Williams decided to go new-fangled and bought a car. Oh how the children (and w ife Vangie) cried, recalls Mrs Rhodes, when her father sold the family's horses. Shortly afte r, two more milestones occurred for the family, one on November 11 of that year, the first Ar mistice parade was held in downtown Yakima. Granddaughter Addie stood on the corner opposit e the store for her parade-side view. After his wife's death, Graves gave up the store but continued living in the home they had shared. He was forced out, however, when the city decided to install a sewer and city water system. Taxes were upped so high he had to move to a home on fifth Avenue. His life took a turn for the better again when he married Sith a Waits and began running a store located on Cherry Avenue. He retained his storekeeper status until he died. Several of his descendants still live in Yakima: Granddaughters Addie R hodes, Blanche Anderson, Juanita Coller, Mary Zeigler, Edith Speer (Edith, Eneinitas, Califor nia), and Patricia Taylor (Pat, Spokane, Washington) Mrs. Rhodes would like to see her grandf ather's now ghost town residence immortalized with a blue light, set atop a power pole, in memory of a man and a town no longer on any maps.

Elbert married Ella Agnes Phoebe Carrell, daughter of John Edward Carroll and Margaret Elizabeth Smith, on 23 Nov 1871 in Sonora, Atchison County, Missouri. Ella was born on 10 Nov 1856 in Cass County, Nebraska, died on 30 Oct 1918 in Yakima, Yakima County, Washington at age 61, and was buried in Tahoma Cemetery, Yakima, Yakima County, Washington.

"The funeral of Mrs Ella A. Graves will be held this afternoon, a short service being h eld for the family at the home at 2 o'clock, followed by a public service at the grave . Mrs Graves died of tuberculosis and Bright's disease Thursday at the family home on T ieton Drive and Seventeenth avenue south. She was born November 10, 1856, in Cass County, Neb . Besides her husband, she leaves to mourn two sons, John and Mark Graves, and one daug hter, Mrs Evangeline Williams, and six grandchildren, all of Yakima, and five brothers, Wilbu r T Carrell of Winthrop, Wash., and Charles, John and Frank Carrell of Peace River, Alberta , also a half sister, Mrs Mary E Jordan of Bickleton, Wash. She united with the Christian Chu rch at Rock Bluffs, Neb., October 25, 1894."

NOTE: In the obituary of Ella Agnes Phoebe Carrell, the fifth brother that was omitted w as Elisha Simpson Carrell also of Peace River, Alberta, Canada. He died 25 March 1926 in Cana da.

A.J. Graves a well known lawyer of Plattsmouth, died October 7, of consumption. He was a n old-time resident of Mills County, and was a brother of Mrs. J.M. Miller of Center township . He was 56 years old and was born in Tennessee. He resided in Mills County from 1852 t o 1864. Later he taught school for a time in Center township. The Plattsmouth papers speak hi ghly of his character as a man and citizen. He is survived by his wife and six children, als o an aged mother, two sisters and six brothers. Death of Mrs A.J. Graves 82, widow of A.J. Graves, former Cass Co. attorney and member of on e of the pioneer families of this section, died Dec.22nd at Oakland, Ca. The news of the deat h of this pioneer lady was received by her daughter, Mrs Adeline Amen, of Lincoln, who notifi ed Judge C.L. Graves of this city, a brother-in-law of the deceased.

Mrs Graves had left this city after the death of her husband in 1906 and spent a few years a t Lincoln where some of her family had located. In 1909 she moved to Tacoma, Wa., to reside , leaving there in 1941 for Oakland where she has made her home with a son, Paul Graves.

Beside Mrs Amen and Paul Graves survivors are a daughter, Mrs Will Grage of Walnut Grove, Ca . and a son, Carl of Souix City, Iowa.

The funeral and interment took place at Oakland.

General Notes: The marriage of J.D. Graves and Miss Capitol Reed of Peru was mentioned briefly in the Ledge r last week, but the fact they are both well known in the county, is sufficient reason for t heir friends to ask us for details of the wedding. The wedding was a nicely planned supr ise, especially for the brides parents, Dr. and Mrs. F.B.Reed, who had been _______to go fo r a visit with Mr. and Mrs. David R. ______relatives residing at Indianapolis, Indiana, and w hen Miss Reed joined her parents there, it caused no suspicion of a wedding not even when M r Graves arrived there the morning of Dec. 30. A minister was conveniently present when dinne r was announced, and the suprise was complete when he pronounced the ceremony at the table. M r. and Mrs. Graves returned to Peru a few days later, and will reside there. Both partie s were Cass County students in the palmy days of the "Naomi Institute" at Rock Bluffs under p rofessor J.D. Patterson and professor (now Judge) B.S. Ramsey. The bride was born in this cou nty, being the daughter of Dr. F.B. Reed who practiced his profession in the village of Roc k Bluffs a number of _____locating in Peru. At Peru Miss Reed graduated from the state Norma l School and later was a graduate of _____in Chicago and Baltimore and has since completed ve ry extensive and successful practice in Peru. SKETCH OF LIFE OF J.D. GRAVES

J.D. Graves, 84, uncle of the Misses Etta and Pearl Graves, died in an Omaha hospital Thur sday, Jan 21. His death was due to influenza. His body was taken to Plattsmouth where he ha d once resided and where short funeral services were held, after which it was taken to Peru w here funeral services and interment took place on Sun Jan 24.

The following life sketch of Mr. Graves appeared in the Peru Pointer:

Julian David Graves was born December 15, 1852, in Mills County, Iowa, and had reached th e age of 84 years, 1 month, and 6 days. His parents moved to Rock Bluff, a then thriving vill age of some size south of Plattsmouth in Cass county, but at present only a town in name. Her e he received his primary education, and later came to Peru and graduated from the Normal sch ool. He then went to Lincoln and studied law, after which he went to Benkleman, where he serv ed as county attorney of Dundy county. He was for a time a resident of Texas, and was mad e a Mason while living there transferring his membership to Peru when he located here permane ntly.
He was married Dec 29, 1901 to Eleanor Capitola (Dr Capp) Reed, and they made their hom e here until her death, he practicing law and looking after their farm interests and she prac ticing medicine until her death Sept 5, 1928. Mrs. Graves was the daughter of the late Dr. F. B. Reed, the first mayor of Rock Bluff.
Since the death of his wife, Mr Graves has continued to make his home in Peru, though a t times he would spend weeks or even months with relatives at Plattsmouth or Lincoln.
Mr. Graves was taken ill with the flu a few days before his death, and Dr. Joder remove d him at once to the hospital. There flu developed in pneumonia, and at his age this proved f atal in spite of all that could be done for him.
Mr. Graves was united with the Methodist church in early life, and was a faithful Christi an as long as he lived, giving liberally both of his goods and service to the church. He wa s a man highly respected by all who knew him. Failing health forced him about three years ag o to cease active work, both in the church and out of it, but he always kept up his interes t in church and community affairs. OBITUARY

This morning at 9:45, at her home in this City. Mrs. Mary E Burnett, one of the Pionee r women of this community, passed away at the ripe old age of eighty four years.
Mrs Burnett had suffered a paralytic stroke two months ago, but had partially recovered , but two weeks ago suffered a second stroke and from which she failed to rally, growing muc h worse in the last few days until death came to end her suffering.
Mary Elizabeth Burnett was born August 15, 1855, in Missouri, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs . William W. Graves, she being one of a family of twelve children. The family moved to Cass C ounty in territorial days and located at Rock Bluffs, where she grew to womanhood. She was ma rried to Joseph Byers, who died in Rock Bluffs in 1898. In later years she married J.W. Burne tt, who preceded her in death several years ago.
Mrs Burnett was the mother of five children by her first marriage. Will, who died at th e age of two years. Mrs Lena Wyatt, who died four years ago. The living children are Charle s Byers of Walthill Nebraska, Lee Byers of Omaha, and Walter Byers of this city. There also s urvives on brother, Judge Charles L. Graves, the last of the pioneer Graves family.

Mary married Joseph John Byers on 9 Feb 1871 in Holt County, Missouri. Joseph was born in 1846 in England and died in 1898 in Rock Bluff, Cass County, Nebraska at age 52.

Alonzo Lacy Dies Saturday at Home in Omaha-Was Schoolmate of Many old Residents Her.

Alonzo Lacy, well known to many early residents of this part of Cass county, passed awa y Saturday at his home in Omaha, at the age of 79 years. Funeral services will be Tuesday a t 2:30 p.m., and interment in Forest Lawn cemetery in Omaha. Lon, as he was familiarly k nown, was a son of George W. Lacy, one of the pioneer settlers in the town of Rock Bluffs, an d it was there that he was a pupil of the late Joseph D. Patterson in "Naomi Institute" in 18 71, and later was a pupil of the late Judge B.S. Ramsey, and a schoolmate of the younger Jone s and Pattersons. He was married to Miss Ellen O. Graves of the pioneer families of Rock Bluf fs, and later they located in Omaha where the wife passed away November 14, 1896. A native of Mills County Iowa, Judge Graves had spent (?) years in Cass County as civi c leader at Rock Bluffs, Union and Plattsmouth. He was 90 years old at the time of his deat h which occurred two months after he suffered broken limbs in a fall here.
A former school teacher, attorney, newspaper publisher, he had served as Justice of th e Peace and Police Magistrate here for the past 23 years being appointed to the post in 192 - , shortly after coming here from Union, where he had practiced law and had published the Un ion Ledger.
During his term as police judge here Judge Graves compiled vast amounts of informatio n about Cass County principally the Union, Rock Bluffs and Plattsmouth communities.
Surviving are Two daughters; Mrs Harry B Royal of Lincoln and Mrs Michael Durtex (?), o ne granddaughter, Helen Nelson,two great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. On e Son Harry E Graves died several weeks ago. His wife preceded him in death." OBITUARY OF ALICE J. GRAVES

Alice J. Graves was born in March, 1866, in Carroll county, Missouri, and came to Nebraska during 1887, and on December 18, 1887, in Plattsmouth, was married to Charles L. Graves. rev. W. H. Alexander officiating. With her husband she shortly after their marriage moved to Union, in this county, where she has resided for the past twenty-four years. Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Graves --- Harry of Eagle, and Misses Verna and Leola at home, who with her husband, are left to mourn her untime [sic] death.
Mrs. Graves had been in poor health for a number of years, her last illness being of about thirteen weeks' duration. she was first attacked with pneumonia, followed by other complications, which would not yield to treatment, although all that medical skill could do was done in her behalf. Mrs. Graves was a kind and obliging neighbor, a loving wife and mother, and had a great many warm friends in the community in which she was best known, and to evidence their great esteem and respect for the departed the Baptist church was crowded at her funeral, which occurred Wednesday afternoon.
Standing room could not be found for all who desired to show their regard for this estimable lady. The funeral was conducted by Rev. W. A. Taylor of Union. Mrs. Graves was a member of the Baptist church and also a member of the Royal Neighbors of America. John Corey of this city, representing the Red Men lodge, of which Mr. Graves is a member, attended the funeral, bearing a wreath of beautiful flowers for the casket of Mrs. Graves. The Journal extends sympathy to the bereaved husband and children in this sad hour of their great sorrow. --

Wife and mother gone, we are now more than ever able to realize that her place in the home as a companion, advisor and protector, was one that she alone could fill, and the vacant chair, the vacant place at the table, and many other objects in the house are silent reminders of her real worth as companion and mother.
During the many weeks of her suffering and at the close of this life neighbors and friends in Union and vicinity did many things to alleviate her suffering and endeavored to cheer the sad hearts; her Royal Neighbor sisters, associates in church and choir, her Pastor, the teachers and pupils, the Noble Red Men order and many others, showed the true Christian spirit in their own good ways; many kind friends here andelswhere have written us words of comfort.
We wish we could grasp the hand of each and express our gratitude, but for the present we can only say in this card that we are very thankful for all those acts and words of kindness to her and to us. Sometime, somewhere, you will all be rewarded.

Edward Graves Funeral Friday in Peru, Nebr.

Edward Graves, son of Alex and Arminda Bomar Graves, was born August 16th, 1871, in Fremon t County, Iowa near the town of Bartlett. In 1889 he, with his parents, moved to a farm in Ca ss County near Plattsmouth, Nebraska. He was married to Nellie Marie Niday on Dec 14, 1904 . To this union six children were born. Five children survive their father. One son Eugene wa s killed in World War II on August 17, 1944. In 1922, Mr. Graves, together with his family , moved to Peru. Two years later Mrs. Graves passed away. Surviving are Louis and Geo of P eru; Theodore of Burke, Virginia; Mrs. Frank Actkins of Carpenteria, California; Mrs. Art New ell of Culver City, Calif,; also sixteen grandchildren; one brother Howard of Plattsmouth; tw o sisters, Mrs. Sadie Vallery of Omaha and Mrs. Bert Crawford of Sherwood, Oregon, besides ma ny relatives and a host of friends. He passed away as he had lived, trusting in the lovin g mercies of the "Good Shepherd of the Sheep" Funeral services were held Friday, October 1 5th at the Peru Christian Church at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Lawrence Williams officiating. Pal lbearers were Everett Applegate, Harry Nicehelser, Geo. Grafton, Everett Heywood, Raymon Redf ord and Earl Adams. Two songs "God Will Take Care of You" and "Nearer My God to Thee" wer e sung by Duane McKnight Accompanist was Mrs. Clyde Duerfeldt. Interment was in the Mt. Ve rnon Cemetery at Peru. Mrs. Eva Ona Graves, a resident of Cass county most of her life, died at Des Moines Marc h 9, following a long illness. She was 87. Mrs. Graves was the daughter of the late Joseph an d Elma Abel Burton, born 23 Sept 1882, at Murray. She attended school and grew to young woman hood in the Murray community. June 28, 1905, she was married to J. Howard Graves at Nebras ka City. They became the parents of five children. The family moved to Plattsmouth in 1925 . Mr. Graves preceded her in death Oct 30, 1965. Most of the four years since her husband' s death, she lived with her daughter in West Des Moines. Mrs. Graves was a member of the Chri stian Church in Plattsmouth. She taught a Sunday School class for many years and was active i n women's work. Earlier in her life, she was employed at Norfolk Canning Factory. Survivors i nclude five children, Clyde Graves of Burbank, Calif., Carl Graves of Inglewood, Calif., Jo e Graves of Sherman Oaks, Calif., Mrs. Lester (Ona) Thinghan of West Des Moines, Ia.,and Mr s Paul (Maxine) Keil of Plattsmouth; a brother, James V. Burton of Harvard; a sister Fannie C ook, of Norfolk; 15 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Service were held March 10, a t Caldwell Funeral Home Chapel, the Rev. Paul L. Whifield, officiating. Organist was Mrs. Twy la Hodge. Pallbearers were Glenn Diggs, Herbert Freeburg, Jess Hodge, Reuel Sack, George Wins cot and Rex Young. This morning at three o’clock, at a hospital in Omaha, the
life of one of the former citizens of Murray ebbed away. The
deceased was Mrs. Harry BAXTER, formerly Miss Grace GRAVES, who
with her husband and children moved to Crofton, in the northern
part of the state, about a year ago.
Some two or three weeks ago, Mrs. Baxter was taken sick with
the influenza then so prevalent over the state. From that came a
complication resulting in the rupture of an arterie of one of
her limbs. This proved so serious that amputation of the member
was deemed necessary if her life was to be spared at all. In the
case of the amputation the desired results were not attained and
the patient grew gradually worse until this morning when the
angel of death, long hovering near, came to her relief, ending
the intense pain she suffered.
Mrs. Baxter leaves besides her husband, two children, one
sixteen months of age, and the other nine years old. She also
leaves a brother and parents living at [looks like] Murray [few
words illegible] Christian church at Murray tomorrow (Thursday)
afternoon at 2 o’clock.

Sources tell us that she was a hooker from the west sid e of the mountains, around Bellingham, Wa. She was quite a gal from the information that we g ot from Frank Carroll (no relation) who lives in Winthrop. (he is 81 years old and has live d in Winthrop off and on all of his life). She used to bake bread to sell and sold booze. (fo r more than the liquor store charged).

* In a conversation with Frank Carroll (no relation) on 31 July 1987, in Winthrop, Washingto n he knew Wilbur Carrell. Wilbur was called Bill and so was Frank Carroll's father. Both Bill s got drunk at a picnic one day and later got into a fight in the Three Fingers Jack pool hal l in Winthrop. Bill Carroll broke several of Wilbur's ribs and his jaw. The fight of the tw o Bill Carrells, was talked about for a long time around town. Frank Carroll said that Wilbe r was a bully.

* According to Frank Carroll, Wilbur Carrell lived on the south fork of the Methow river wes t of Winthrop. He grew alfalfa on irrigated land. He later lived about 3 miles east of Winthr op on the old Twisp road. ( we saw the house that Frank Carroll said he lived in.)

* Wilbur Carrell moved to Winthrop around 1920.

* Wilbur Carrell's Marriage license states: born 1875 married Nellie Graves 7 June 1896. (Wil bur is the youngest son of John E Carrell and Margaret Smith) Nellie Graves father is Calvi n Graves her mother is Milissa Jane Shaffer. OBITUARY

Pearl Graves Smith was born at Rock Bluff, Nebraska in June 1876 and died April 1, 190 9 at her home at Bluelight, Washington. Deceased was the wife of Charles Smith. Pearl was th e oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.L. Graves who resided in the county many years. Her illne ss began about 7 years ago at which time her health was impaired by what proved to be consump tion and the past year she was unable to attend to any of the houshold work. She leave s to mourn her death her husband and two children, a daughter of seven years old and a son on e year old. Also parents, two brothers, John and Mark and two sisters, Evangeline and LuLu Gr aves. She was a most kind and noble lady, with always a smile for everyone and had bee n a faithful member of the United Brethren Church since 1895. The funeral services wer e held at her home conducted by Rev. Ragon of Bickleton.(this obit was found in the Cass Coun ty Museum, Plattsmouth, Nebraska, in scrapbook #1, Gold colored, pg 81.)

Carl Raymond Graves

Carl Raymond Graves, 74, of South Freeman Blvd, Inglewood, Calif., died of a heart attack , in his home, Jan. 29, 1960. Born in Rock Bluffs, Neb. on August 19, 1885, he was the elde r son of the late A.J. Graves, former county attorney of Cass county, and Emma A. Graves, lon gtime residents of Plattsmouth. A graduate in the class of 1902, of the Plattsmouth High Sc hool, Carl (Cal) was also a popular baseball player here and in a bush league at Ulysses. The re he met and later married Nettie Octavia Spelts, in 1909. An employee of the Bell Teleph one Co. for 42 years at Lincoln, Neb. and Sioux City, Ia., he retired in 1950. With his famil y he moved to Inglewood, where he lived the remainder of his life. Surviving him, beside s his wife, Nettie O. Graves, is a son Harold Raymond Graves and three granddaughters, Saundr a, Carla and Jo Ellen Graves, all of Hawthorne, Calif., a brother Paul E. Graves, of El Monte , Calif., two sisters, Mrs. Adeline Amen of Lincoln, Neb. and Mrs. Ethel Grage of Walnut Grov e, Calif. He was a cousin of Judge James H. Graves of Plattsmouth, Nebr. Services were held F eb. 1 in "The Little Church Around The Corner", in Inglewood, Calif. Burial was in Inglewoo d Park Cemetery. Life story of Charles Luther Byrers, Pioneer Resident. Charles L. Byers, 86, Pioneer residen t of Walthill, Nebraska, community since 1913 passed away at the home of his son, Julian Byer s of David City, Nebraska on Jan 8, 1959 following a relatively short period of disability. F uneral services were held on Sunday afternoon Jan 11 in the Walthill Methodist Church, The Re v. ________ officiating. During the services organ interludes "The Evening Prayer" & "Abide w ith Me" were played by church organist, Mrs. Ralph Copenhemer. Burial was at the Evergreen Ce metery in Walthill with William M. Hopper, George E. Sappenfield, Henry Beard, Harold Cromwel l and Earl Burkhart of Walthill, Caskett Bearers. Mr. Byers is survived by his 4 sons: Charle s of Sioux City, James J. of Berkeley, California, Donald H. of Omaha and Julian of David Cit y, Nebraska. Two daughters: Mrs Faye Vane, Berkeley California, Mrs. Benny Fransen of Rosail a and other relatives and friends. He was a cousin of Judge J.H. Graves of this city. Charle s Luther Byers, son of Joseph and Mary E. Graves Byers, was born July 9, 1876. He was the old est of the four children of the Byers family. The others in order were: Lee Alonzo, Walter Pa ul and Orlena Opal Wyatt, they all preceded Charles in Death. Charles being last of the famil y. He Was born in Bartlett, Iowa, Freemont County and while yet a small child he was brough t by the parents to Cass County, Nebraska. He was married to Minnie Baker on Feb 8, 1897, thi s marriage union last over 60 years and was broken by the death of Mrs. Byers in June 1957. T hey lived in Rock Bluff and Nebraska City before moving to Walthill in 1913. He worked on th e construction of the Procotte Hospital at Walthill and later as a mechanic in a garage unti l 1919 when he started to work for the City Water dept, later serving as a city electrician u ntil 1930 and with the Central States Electric Company. He retired permanently from work whe n reaching the age of 70. Mr. Byers was an ardent Baseball fan and player from his childhoo d and even continued playing with Walthill until after he was 70 years old.

Charles Luther Byers was also known as "Charley". Conley's visited his daughter, Cloe Anderso n in 1996. DOB on tombstone in Walthill cemetery reads: 1874

His second wife's name was Lil, she had a sister Violet. Lee was jolly, always had a smile, had a mustache, balding, hair was sandy, tall, thin. Lee hunted with his dog "Bob", Lee could swim like a fish, Had big garden , raised watermelon, he kept bees, He was allergic to bees, Lived north of Decator, Nebraska , he was well liked, about six foot tall. His mother Mary Elizabeth, had red hair. She had just put a Henna rinse on it before she died. Mary was thin, tiny, short, about 5'4", she loved flowers. His father Joseph died of cancer in 1886.

General Notes: Lora Ellen Bachler divorced Lee Alonzo Byers and Lora and her daughter, Mahala Winnifred, came out to Bickleton, Washington and met and married Zale Wood. Zale Wood did not treat her daughter very good so Lora sent her daughter to live with Lora's 1/2 sister in Seattle, Washington. (Eleanore Parker Luhman) Lora Ellen divorced Zale Wood and Married Erwin Knowles.

Death of Walter Byers

This morning at the Rest Haven home at Weeping Water, Walter Byers a life time resident of Cass County, died at the age of 64 years following a long period of failing health. Mr Byers is one of the last of old time residents of Rock Bluff where he was born on June 22, 1879 . Spending the greater part of his life time in the community, although the last few year he has spent residing in Plattsmouth. His condition the last few weeks made necessary his being taken to the home for care and attention. There is surviving his passing three daughters ; Mrs Milo Farnery of this city, Mrs Joe MacNeal of North Platt and Mrs Henry Chappell of this city as well as two brothers; Charles Byers of Walthill, Nebraska and Lee Byers of Omaha. His parents and one sister have preceded him in death. The body is at the Caldwell Funeral home to await funeral arrangements. Harry E. Graves, son of Judge Charles L. Graves of Plattsmouth, died at Lincoln Saturday , October 27, 1951. He was 62 years old. A native of the Plattsmouth community, Mr. Grave s had been suffering from cancer for the past year. He had been a Linotype operator on the Li ncoln Journal staff for the past 25 years. Surviving besides his father, are his wife, Cle o, and daughter, Mrs H.F. Nelson, sisters, Mrs. Michael Derieg and Mrs. Harry Royal, all of L incoln; two granddaughters and two great granddaughters. Born at Union, he got his start i n the newspaper business with his father on the Union Ledger. Later he published the Murray I tems and for a short time was employed on the Plattsmouth Journal. CARL GRAVES Carl B. Graves, son of J. Howard and Eva Graves , was born Aug 7, 1907, at Rock Bluffs. He grew up in the Plattsmouth area and graduated f rom Plattsmouth High School. On June 17 1931 he married Alice Hutton of Plattsmouth. Mr. G raves died Fri., July 14, 1995 at Lancaster, Calif., at the age of 87. Survivors include : Wife Alice; sons Robert, Gary, Rod; daughters Patti and Joyce; sisters Ona Thimgan and Maxi ne Keil; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brot hers Clyde and Joe. After moving to California in 1942, he worked for 30 years as a Linoty pe operator for the Los Angeles Times, retiring in 1972. Prior to that, he had learned his tr ade while working for the Plattsmouth Journal. Union Gap - Mrs Addie L. Rhodes,78, of Yakima died Sunday, June 4, 1989 at the Parkside N ursing Care Center, Union Gap. She was born November 10, 1910 in Yakima to Elmer T. & Ma ry E. (Graves) Williams. She was raised and educated in Yakima and it was there that she marr ied Leonard Rhodes on September 18, 1929. In her earlier years she was a sorter at several lo cal fruit warehouses. She was also a housewife and homemaker. Mrs Rhodes was a member o f the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 6th Ward and enjoyed genealogy work, garde ning and working in her yard. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Elmer & Geor gia Rhodes of Yakima. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Rhodes on April 11, 1 958. Graveside services will be held Thursday, June 8, at 11 a.m. at Tahoma Cemetery. Those a ttending will meet at the grave. Memorials may be made to the donor's favorite charity. *Don & Scharmal Conley received the address of Addie Rhodes from Ada Ruth Whitmore of Bicklet on, Wa. They wrote to her and went to visit her in 1987. She had been ill however she was hap py to meet them. She had a family album which belonged to her grandfather and mother. She all owed Don to take photos of the pictures in it. We are grateful as many Carrell & Graves peopl e were in it. She showed us her book of memories and gave us some addresses. She also had tin type photos and a bible that we didn't see. She took us to the cemetery to take photos of mar kers. Many of her photos are in "The Descendants of John Graves" book as well as some informa tion. Her full name is Addie Idella Williams. She has a brother, Harvey Glenn Williams ( deceased). She was born on her grandmothers' birthday. Her mother was "Vangie", Mary Evangeli ne Graves Williams. Addie's book of memories are on tape at the LDS, put there by Nela Ray Ho lt. Addie's parents or grandparents were married on John Edward Carrell's homestead-20 a cre tract- Cass County, Nebraska. Addie's son, Elmer Leonard is an engineer. He and hi s ex wife, Georgia have no children. He lives in the Autanum, Yakima, Washington. He is name d after Addie's father. Addie recalled that her Uncle John gave the photo album to Addie's gr andma (Ella Agnes Phoebe Carrell Graves). Addie received the album in 1934 when her mother di ed. Addie and her Uncle John cleaned the Tahoma Cemetery plots before perpetual care. Ad die is Morman. Born and raised in Yakima, Washington. She said she looked like her Aunt LuLu . (1987 interview)

On 1 Aug 1917 Joseph Triesch joined the U.S. Army in Prosser, Washington and took his training at Camp Lewis, Washington and then assembled at Fort Walla Walla, Washington. Then on to France and Germany to fight in WW I. He was discharged from the Army, 29 June 1919, at Camp Lewis, Washington.

Joseph Triesch was a barber in Tacoma, Washington before moving back to Benton City, Washington with his wife, Mahala Winnifred Byers and their young son, Otto Joseph Triesch.

Simon Martin Triesch, Joseph's father, lived with Joseph and his wife until a short time before his death. Then he went to live with his daughter, Theresa. Simon Martin Triesch died in 1935.

The following is from a newspaper clipping in September 1926: "Joe and Winnifred Triesch traded their Benton City property for a poultry farm on the coast to Mr. Whitehead. A going away party was held for them with 125 people attending."

JOE TRIESCH WAS 1912 PIONEER OF BENTON CITY

Joseph P. Triesch, 100 Kiona Ave., Benton City, died Thursday, June 24, 1976 at the Veterans Hospital in Walla Walla, being born in Colton, Whitman County, February 20, 1894.
He came to Benton City in 1912 and was employed variously, enlisting in the Army in WWI serving overseas in France. He was employed by General Electric on the Hanford Project as a custodian, retiring in 1959.
He was a member of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Catholic Church in Benton City and was a member of Muernice Wilson Post No. 115 of the American Legion, active in the civic life in Benton City.
Surviving are his wife, Winnifred L. Triesch, and son, Otto Triesch, at home; daughter, Mrs. Don (Scharmal) Conley of Kennewick; sister, Mrs. A.T. Moran, Milton-Freewater, Ore.; and four grandchildren.
Following Rosary on Monday at the church at 7 p.m., Requiem Mass was celebrated at 11 a.m . Tuesday in St Francis Xavier Cabrini Church with the Rev. Msgr. William J. Sweeney celebrant.
Burial was made in the Sunset Memorial Gardens on the by-pass highway in Richland by bearers; Ernest Feuerborn, Milton Epperson, Lacy Allen, Richard Howard, Thomas Mathews, George Lanman; and honorary bearers Ercy Morse and Walter Krom of Post 115, American Legion arrangements by Einan's Funeral Home.
