Model Classroom Activities at the Watkins Primary Learning Center
This is our sixth year exploring butterflies with
second graders as part of the DC Public Schools Math, Science and Technology
Initiative (MSTI). Most students come to Watkins from Peabody with rich prior
knowledge of Monarch butterflies; however, their skill level has developed considerably.
They can use the powers of reading, writing, and mathematics to describe what
they observe. They also can research what scientists have written or observed
and communicate with scientists through the Journey
North Internet experience.
Our school has been a demonstration center modeling the practices of the Northeast
Foundation for Children. The beliefs of NEFC's science teaching guide our
work with children:
We also are guided by the Primary Literacy Standards for kindergarten through third grade of the National Center on Education and the Economy. Through science reading, students develop comprehension skills and the habit of reading. They have an authentic purpose for writing that supports good language use and conventions. Science exploration motivates students in their transition from "learning to read" to "reading to learn."
