The Islands of Fiji

Fiji's 332 islands lie in the heart of the Pacific Ocean midway between the Equator and the South Pole. Each is beautiful. Each has snow-white beaches, turquoise and jade green reefs and coral gardens. The shores are safe and pollution free. The islands offer warm sunny days and starlit nights.

Culture

You can explore the ruins of a fascinating pre-European war hill fortification, or wander through a colonial town that has changed little in over 150 years and soak up the history that surrounds you. Marvel at the exotic customs of the Fijian, Indian, Chinese, Rotuman and other cultures that have made Fiji their home.

Fiji offers an adventure for the shopper as bargaining with the local shopkeeper is a way of life and a must to get the best price. Fiji has some wonderful displays of local handicrafts, gold jewelry, watches, electrical items, local clothing and a host of duty free shops. The locals are very friendly and like to chat while bargaining with the customer.

Fiji has a restaurant to suit everyone's budget and tastes where the visitor can experience the flavors of your typical Indian or Fijian, Chinese, Japanese and European cuisine.

Night life can be found throughout Fiji, whether it be the sounds of Fiji's famous Black Rose band, Fijian entertainers and of course, disco.Visitors to Fiji will have a chance to see something of Fijian Culture. Usually this will be a meke staged at your resort and featuring the traditional songs and dances of the Fijians.

Ever heard of firewalking? Fiji, will provide the visitor with a lifetime experience by watching the legendary firewalkers of Beqa Island, close to Pacific Harbour let the Fijians entertain you with their traditional arts including weaving of pandanus palm mats, woodcarving, pottery, canoe making and the making of tapa cloth from bark. Or discover the Indian culture by visiting their elaborate temple in Nadi.

Population

The population of Fiji on August 25, 1996 stood at 772,655. Of the total, 394,999 were Fijians, 336,579 were Indians and 41,077 were others.

Travel Tips

Language:

English is widely used but with Fijian and Hindi predominate.  

Dress:

Suitable dress is cotton, cool, casual and relatively modest. A cardigan sweater or light jacket may be required in the evenings. 

Immigration:

Visitors must have a current passport valid for more than three months from the date of entry, adequate funds to support themselves and a return ticket. Permits are granted on arrival for four months and may be extended for up to six months. 

Health:

Fiji is free from most tropical diseases and inoculation is not required unless entering from a designated infected area.   

Medical:

Hospitals are located in the major centres and there are health centres in rural areas. Hotels and resorts usually have a qualified nurse on the premises and a doctor on call. As in all travel it is wise to take out comprehensive health insurance.

Transport:

Traveling by bus is cheap and enjoyable. Buses can usually be waved down on the road in a similar fashion to taxis. Taxis are numerous and are metered at 50 cents flag fall. Ferries operate to many of the outer islands with facilities for transporting vehicles. 

Electricity:

Electricity is available to all main centres at 240 volts, 50 cycles A.C.  

Bank / Foreign exchange:

Six major banks operate in Fiji. A.N.Z., Westpac, National Bank of Fiji, Bank of Baroda, Habib bank and Bank of Hawaii. A.N.Z. operates a 24 hour service at Nadi Airport. Major hotels will change foreign currencies and cash traveller's cheques. Credit cards are accepted.      

Tipping:

Is not encouraged but excellent service can be recognized by a gratuity.
