where? Yakutat Alaska is the smallest populated area on earth with daily commercial jet service - thank you Alaska Airlines and Department of Defense! Located on the Southeastern Alaska coast Yakutat boasts some of the finest salmon fishing and rainiest weather in all of Alaska. This is hard core, no wimp fishing at its finest - pack the bug spray, rain gear and waders. Ya just gotta love the feel of rain on your face while you're reeling in the big ones. |

| Why did
we do this? We love the outdoors and love to fish away from crowds.Julie and I celebrated our 13th wedding anniversary here. We had a great experience, caught lots of fish, enjoyed wonderful social interactions and booked our trip for next year before we left. We have vacationed in Tahiti, Maui, Florida, back packed and horse packed into the Sierras and Rocky Mountains and fished for salmon on Prince of Wales Island, AK. This was by far our best vacation experience yet and we plan to do it again. |

Activity - Fishing We visited at the peak of the Coho (silver) salmon season which is usually the last week of August and most of the month of September. River fishing was very good for 7 - 14 lb silvers especially when the commercial gill netting operations are down. As an added bonus, we caught very few pink salmon which have been a major nuisance on our previous salmon fishing trips to Alaska. Starting in May, Steelhead enter the river and runs of King (Chinook) and Sockeye are present in June and July. These are also strong runs - check with your lodge for peak times. Ocean fishing for halibut and ling cod is also very good aboard the Hooker fleet (4-5 guests per boat), but since the latest El Nino there has been a major sand shark (a.k.a. dog fish) infestation in the area which makes it difficult to keep the bait on the bottom long enough for the halibut to find your hook. |
