Ultima VIII: Pagan

There is supposedly a cheat that enables hack mover (move anything), and power avatar (invincible). Go to the Ultima 8 directory and type mkdir u9. This will create a new dos subdirectory named u9. Start the game and press F2 for the cheat menu. This hasn't worked for me. I may investigate further.

Ultima VIII is an interesting game, and I'm pretty sure Richard Garriott caught some flak from right-wing fundamentalist groups about it, but I think that's what he was shooting for when he designed this game.

In this Ultima, the player reprises his role as the Avatar, but on the world of Pagan; one of the dimensions the Guardian has conquered in his quest for whatever it is he's looking for. (I hope to find out what that is in Ultima IX: Ascension.) Ultima VIII caught criticism about it's not only it's controversial title, but pretty much everything about the game. Reactionary fanatics claimed it was evil heresy, and gamers complained about the engine and the way it matched up to previous Ultimas.

Snatched off the Serpent Isle by the Guardian after restoring Balance and foiling the big red guy's insane plot to destroy everything, the Avatar is dragged through the Void and dropped onto Pagan to keep him busy while the Guardian takes over Britannia and Earth, in that order. Pagan is practically an alien world at first, and the general population is completely ignorant as to the truth of their history and the four Elemental Titans that the Guardian left to dominate in his place.

Pagan is confusing at first, especially after Serpent Isle, but despite initial dubious feelings about it, it's not such a bad game.
