Dear Editor,
Apartheid
was completely unjust and it permeated every part of my life. As a black child growing up in Soweto, I saw
the affluence of white communities. I
didn’t understand why my parents were poor and didn’t have a nice house. I thought that blacks were worse people
because they couldn’t be successful and gain wealth like white people. My parents were barely able to feed my
brothers and sisters and now I work 15 hours a day to keep my children from
starving. I served under white people
and was dependant on their money. The
struggle against Apartheid was also difficult.
My eldest son was one of the protestors slaughtered at Soweto and I often
feared for my family’s safety. Even
though we have shown the world community what happened to us and put an end to
Apartheid, its legacy continues and we have a long way to go if black people
will ever catch up to white people.
