| The ASF-E estimates the effectiveness of the family's functioning within the four dimensions and targets of family functioning. It is a subjective measure. Assessments by various family members can vary significantly. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| The ASF-E estimates the need for clinical intervention. The scores will give the clinician direction and suggest what needs to be the focus of therapy. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Clinical treatment evaluation: A rise in scores over time indicates progress. The tool should be used in conjunction with a thorough clinical assessment of the family in order to estimate the validity of the clients' score. Often, in early treatment, clients tend to overestimate their families in strengths and stability.
