GAME TURN ONE
Background
The HMS ‘Watcher’ under command of Captain Drowd Repeen has a long
string of succesful voyages, over the past three years. Taking numerous prizes
and capping off his string of victories with the capture of the French Forty
Gun Frigate ‘Republic’ in a spirited boarding action that saw over a third of
the ‘Watcher’s’ crew killed or wounded. Captain Repeen has been appointed to
command of a 74 gun Ship-of-the-Line back in England and all of his Lieutenants
jumped at the chance to accompany him. It appears he wanted to keep a proven
cadre together and such was his reputation, with the Admiralty, that he was
allowed to do so. Captain Sir Robert Stark has been appointed to command, and
has come out from England aboard the HMS ‘Diamond’ 38 which escorted the recent
convoy of army supply ships.
Current Situation
The convoy is just entering the harbor. The merchant ship ‘Rebecca’ is
part of this convoy. Captain Sir Stark your new command is in site. She is
riding high in the water, but looks immaculate. Acting Leftenant MacDonald is
the oficer of the deck, and normal duty watch is present on deck. There seems
to be a lot of commotion though and the Marines appear to be forming up and
several other officers are coming on deck. Leftenant Eric Jones you’ve been in
Bermuda several days and have quarters aboard the ‘Jana’ as she is being used
as barracks ship. A midshipman from the ‘Buffonia’ arrives and presents you
with orders assigning you to the ‘Watcher.’
Player Turn One
Eric reads the message shaking off a
terrible hangover. Climbing out of my bed and
gathering my sack of clothes I proceed over to the
HMS
‘Watcher,’ walking through the port looking around
to
see how many people are here and how many ships are
here. Quite a few vessels inharbor a convoy is
arriving
I walk onto
the ‘Watcher’ and introduce myself as
Lt Eric Jones of the Royal Navy. "I just
received this
message to report to the ship, Ive been waiting here
for days on the ‘Jana’." I then walk around the
ship
taking a look at her size and guns introducing
myself
to the crew letting them take notice of my large
frame
and square jaw, so my presence is felt by everyone.
I
am wondering when I will get paid and how much, what
the days are like and exactly what I will be doing
on the ship
Leftenant Fitroy(1st) shakes his head and says “you
sir, will report to Captain Stark after he assumes command. Until then consider
yourself a supernumary attached to the ship. Captain Repeen is not accustomed
to receiving new officers with hangovers”
Rob looks
across the water admiring his ship, HIS
SHIP ! He silently
makes a vow before we are done lady the world will
know of the proud lady
‘Watcher’ and her captain.
Rob will
use his glass to see what the comotion is on ‘Watcher.’ If it is
nothing serious... Well sought of serious...A post
captain and all the ships officers appear to be on deck undergoing his
inspection. A midshipman aboard the ‘Diamond’ reports to you about a signal
from ‘Watcher.’ What you’ve already
seen through your glass, Captain Repeen’s compliments and after you’ve payed
your respects to the Rear Admiral Medicus we can arrange the change of Command.
(Gamer info a senior officer presents his compliments while a junior officer
sends his respects. He will take the first available boat to port and present
himself and his orders to the Rear Admiral Sir Harold Medicus KCB . Rob has tried and researched Sir Harold
befor he left London (use maritime lore and
Etiquette) to find out the man’s background and
tastes.
If he find's the the admiral likes wine he will
bring him a bottle from
London or possably tobacoo maybe somthing more
obscure (kiss up on the first
day is not a bad thing)
His
enquiries discover Sir Harold served with Commander Kinsington’s father, a
retired Commodore. His service has been mostly with the Channel Fleet, although
he was deployed to the East Indies as young Midshipman., and tells a tale about
the Sultans Harem aboard the flagship that appear to ‘guild the lilly,’ just
bit. Battle experience includes service as a Leftenant aboard the ‘Queen
Charlotte’ 100 with Lord Howe during the Glorious First of June against the French (1794) and
promoted to Captain after that battle. He was a Commodore 2nd Class commanding
the frigate ‘Euryalus’ 38 during Trafalgar 11 years lator, and just recently
promoted to Rear Admiral with the unheard low seniority of only 18 years as a
Post Captain. He is known to have a taste for French Brandy and Virgina Tobacco
and officers taking prizes under his command have benefited from captures
containing these items.
Captain Stark is received aboard the ‘Buffonia’ by
Captain Giles and Rear Admiral Medicus and the bottle of French Brandy scores a
few points of good will. All three officers then proceed to the ‘Watcher’ where
the change of command takes place. Rear Admiral Medicus,Captains Giles and
Repeen then takes the Admiral’s barge to the ‘Diamond.’ Lator the midshipman of
the Watch reports signal from the ‘Buffonia’ All Captains are invited to dinner
aboard the flagship at 1800 hours.”
