Captain Livingsone you arrived in Bermuda several days ago aboard HMS Diamond 32 frigate. She was the escort for a convoy that stopped briefly in Bermuda to replenish water and pick up dispatches from Lieutenant General Lord Rupert Governor and Garrison Commander of the Island. The Jana has returned early this morning and you have orders to relieve Captain Vickery. Rumor has it Vickery will be returning to England to assume command of a frigate. The Jana’s service has been uneventful patrol duty for the most part. She did engage the USS United States 44 with HMS Watcher 32. She succeeded in raking the bigger American ship once before being ordered to disengage and screen the convoy by Watcher. The Jana withdrew under protest.

Sistership to Pellew’s famed Indefatigable she is a razee 44 (cut dow ship of the line to make a powerful frigate; 64’s converted this way were often successful, 74’s were not). Captain Giles is the Flag Captain he detests Americans and is suspicious of the nobility as he feels most are a pampered elite who didn’t have to earn their positions. Leftenant Harris is the Flag Lieutenant who wears a fine dueling rapier in place of a reguler naval officers sword. Major John Paul Surtees Royal Marines has been recently promoted from commanding the Buffonia’s detachment to a larger force of Royal Marines that are part of the Port Garrison.

Leftenant Darkridge you also recently arrived. Your ship was very short on junior officers and despite your inexperience you were appointed as prizemaster of the French Corvette Rapide 12. Admiral Medicus reviewed your Letter of Introduction and has decided your opportunities for advancement would be greater as First Lieutent on a Sloop of War rather than Third Lieutenant on a Frigate

The Jana is low on provisions, powder and shot having returned from four months of convoy duty and blockade off the Eastern US Coast. Ship’s condition appears sound. The Second Lieutenant has been detached as a prizemaster. (Note Sloops commanded by Post Captains rated two lieutenants, those commanded by Commanders only one).
