TOM BODETT IS A HOMERITE AND FAVORITE SON.

His tongue in cheek portrayals of people and events at the "End of the Road" had some of us howling in laughter and others crying for mercy. His stereotyped characters made us see ourselves as others might see us, and we are a strange lot! If you haven't read his books, perhaps you've seen Tom on America's Historical Trails on PBS.

This is the one I use constantly. There are so many beautiful birds here in Homer, and throughtout Alaska. Although I'm not officially a "birder", I enjoy identifying the birds I see and making notes as to when and where. It is fun to look back over the record to see if they are late, early, rare or just old friends.

Another reference I use often. Our state is large and complex. Sometimes it is useful to check relative distances and actual directions between places to make flight and float plans, figure ETA's or just look up the name of a mountain or glacier you're gazing at along the way. This is a wonderful resource.

SWIMMER is a story for children. It describes the life of "Swimmer", a Chinook Salmon, as it parallels the coming of age of "Katya", an Alask Native girl. Wonderful artwork and an insightful story. Filled with factual and scientific information which is written outside the story, around the borders of the pages. A really nifty format. Adults love it, too.
