Joseph Howard reached adulthood in Pope Co., AR, served in the Confederate Army, became a farmer & landowner, & served in the AR legislature 1898-1899. He gave each of his children, 20 acres of land to farm when they married. Mary Francis called her husband, "Mistah Howard". Their community of Piney Creek became known as Howard Community, the local school, Howard school. & the church referred to as Howard Church. Their community & Ladd Community were combined to be known as Bull Frog Valley, for Chief Bull Frog who lived in Martin Township before the settlers settled there.
