During the goldstrike of 1849, John went to California, returned with gold to Arkansas and bought field hands. After the Civil War, he lost the field hands and the gold.

John A. Johnson enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1863, and served as a private. John fought in the battle of Cane Hill in Northwest Arkansas, which resulted in detrimental losses. John Adkins Johnson lost his slaves before the end of the war. "They took a wagon, a team and some grain and just disappeared into the night". Slave quarters located a few yards south of the old Johnson Cemetery in Greasy Valley (if still standing) marks the family farm site. John's father-in-law, William S. Lee was also strong anti-slavery.

John Johnson owned 120 acres of land with 100 acres under cultivation, growing corn and cotton. Mrs. Mary Johnson was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South.


Walter M. Guthrie information. In Paris Express, dated 10 Aug 1933, died at age 81, date of death 5 Aug 1933. He was member of the M. E. Methodist Church at Scranton, Logan Co., AR. Son: William, two daughters: Mrs. Joe Carper & Mrs. Omer Ewing(Scranton). A son died young, named: Dolph Guthrie(Paris).

John Adkins Johnson's second wife, Margaret Cravens Guthrie was a widow, whose first husband was William L. Guthrie. He was killed by bushwhackers in the Civil War. His body was brought back by his people in an ox cart and was buried on the Guthrie Cemetery located west of Prairie View.

History of Jay Wafer Dodson, lived in Paris, Ark. R-1, had always been a farmer, born 25 Jul 1860 in Shelby Co., AL. 1st marriage: Laura Chesser in Nov. 25, 1881, Weldon County. She was born Dec. 1883, AL. Jay came by Missouri Pacific RR seeking a homestead. He built a pine knot house with a chimney. Lighting was by tallow candles the pioneers made, the fuel to heat with was wood. The food was made from corn meal and wild game was plentiful. Sorghum molasses was their "jelly". Corn & cotton, wheat, oats, potatoes. Before my day tomatoes were love apples. The people shared their food with the needy. Home spun shoes, and looms with spinning wheels were used to make what was worn. All plows used were homemade. Smith’s made them, no factory made implements. Chivaries (shivarees) at weddings. Home Guards were a total of 12 men who would be ready to fight were formed. If there was a fire they used bucket brigades and back fire. In Shelby County Double Mt, Red Mt, Oak Mt, Coosa River. Caharber, game was deer, raccoons, and turkeys. Shelby Co. AL school had a frame building located some 30 miles from town west Dadeville, AL. Johnie Lowe, his teacher was 25 years old. Fund for schools were by subscription. They used McGuffey Readers, Webster's Blue Back Speller. There was a Negro school near my home school.The local paper was the County Paper, The Shelby Centinal/Sentinel. Horse n' buggies, trolley cars, ox carts were used for transportation. In 1910, at Paris, Ark horse cars in 1868 the Louisville & Nashville RR. In 1914 at Paris, Ark. The first buses began in 1926 at Fort Smith. Jay was a small boy Just after Civil War Ku Klux Klan was organized here. Jay's descendents were usually close so he knew most of them; a total of 11 children, 26 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren. nformation by interview with Elisha C. Harris 12 Jun 1941.


The Paris Express, dated 10 Aug 1933, “Walter Guthrie, 81, from Scranton, died at his home, 8pm Sat. night after a year’s illness. He was born at Prairie View, and a lifelong resident of Logan County. Survivors: Son: Will, Scranton, Daughters: Mrs. Joe Carper & Mrs. Omer Ewing, Scranton & Dolph Guthrie, Paris. Funeral services held at the Methodist Episcopal Church, Scranton & burial at Prairie View Cemetery”.

The Paris Express, dated 23 Apr 1936, “Mrs. Emma Guthrie, 81, found dead in her bed at the home of her daughter, Mrs. O. B. Ewing, early Wed a.m. Death was caused by heart attack. She was a native of TN, but carried to AR as an infant & has lived all her life at Scranton. She was a member of the Methodist Church. Survivors: Daughters: Mrs. Ewing & Mrs. Jake Carper, Okemah, OK. Son: Will Guthrie, Hot Springs. Sister: Mrs. Mollie Smith, Paris. Brother: Jeff Dobbins, Ripley, OK. She was also the mother of Dolph Guthrie, who was a bank employee that was killed in the 1933 robbery of a bank at Paris. Funeral services at the Methodist Church & burial at Prairie View Cemetery”.
