Notations on Thomas A. Lee family

Thomas A. Lee was 13 years old when the Civil War Battle of Haguewood Prairie occurred near his home. He met a group of Confederates that had accompanied an ammunition wagon, as they left the battle scene they encouraged young Tom to go with them. The Confederates had stopped by a watering hole and had Tom hold the mules. The last rebel to descend the creek bank motioned for Tom to escape, so Tom quickly cut the leather tugs and stripped one mule loose, jumped on, headed the mule westward with the mule braying loudly as Tom lashed the mule to top speed and escaped the Confederates.

Tom's father, Daniel R. Lee, decided after this incident to go into the mountains to the south and stay until things quieted down. They were climbing the "grapevine trail" on Rich Mountain and were fired upon by bushwhackers. Daniel Lee was hit in the chest but continued on till able to hide in the underbrush. Daniel had instructed Tom to insert a knife blade in the wound which somehow relieved the discomfort till they could reach a safe place for proper medical treatment. Daniel R. Lee lived 30 years after the war's end, spending part of his remaining years in the home of Thomas A. Lee at Millard on Shoal Creek in Arkansas.
