Echobode was killed by bushwhackers in Lester Powers bottom lands. His parents, brother and sisters homes were ransacked as Confederates searched for anything of value. Echobode attempted to stop them. Confederates robbed him of his gold watch. His sisters loaded his body in a wheel barrow and buried him in Moss Creek at night due to their fear of the return of the bushwhackers. Verbal history relates of his body being buried at a hickory tree in the center of the Moss Creek cemetery. John Powers gathered up the guns and loaded each to ready himself in case the bushwhackers sneaked back. John was splitting rail fences near the Ball homestead when they did return, he fired upon them, hitting one horse in the leg, resulting in the horse dismounting its rider. The rider double mounted with another bushwhacker while John continued to fire with the weapons he had made ready. That was the last the family saw of bushwhacers in Moss Creek. Echobode was the eldest of the Herring children. His wife died soon after he did, leaving two children. Mollie Herring Brown, Echobode’s sister took the two children to live with her in Texas.
