George Herring experienced years of battling depression due to failing enterprises and attempted suicide. One attempt was to run his horse off the edge of a cliff.
George travelled to California to make his fortune in the gold fields but his dream died with no gold found. He bought land with a dairy next. He encouraged his nephew, John Ball, to come from Arkansas to California. But was unable to kept the dairy running and had to sell out after 7 to 8 years.
George, being unable to overcome his emotional depth of depression took his life.
Sylvia Herring corresponded with Sylvia Ball, her namesake. A golden wedding ring was passed to Sylvia Ball from Sylvia Herring, then to Mary Mauline Allinder.
