Adopted Children of Alfred Reed & Juanita Denton Ross

Adopted Edward Ross's two oldest children after he and Martha Chandler separated.

The Paris Express, dated 6 Nov 1930, “Alfred Reed, on 5th Nov., returns home. He is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Ed Reed, Branch. He was seriously ill in a Shreveport, LA hospital. Mrs. Reed, & her daughter, Ida Coogan & her husband, Charlie Coogan visited Mr. Reed at Shreveport, and accompanied him to Ft. Smith on the train & from Ft. Smith to Branch by car”.

Alfred Reed served in the Army from 1938 to 1962, as a Master Sgt. in the 1st Battalion, 51st Field Artillery. He served in Europe (Germany) and the Far East (Phillipines) and in the Korean War. He was a Master Sgt. of the Army crew in the Nevada desert, 867th Field Artillery Battalion on the 25 May 1953 at Frenchman's Flat, NV when firing the first atomic missile, "Honest John" and his name is enscribed on the display plate on Cannon Walk at Ft. Sill, OK.

After retirement at Ft. Sill, he first owned a Texaco Station just outside Ft. Sill's Gate Two for less than 5 years. He then worked for the civil service as a diesel bus driver for the Army, and an ambulance driver until he retired in 1978. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Masonic Lodge. The Reed's remained in Lawton-Ft. Sill, OK area the majority of their lives at the same residence.

In his later years, he began losing his hearing in the war, he acquired Parkinson's Disease after a stroke, which resulted in aphasia. He also has a Reed family genetic pancreatic disease which Orville, his brother died of and Orville's son has acquired.

Juanita Glenda Reed was a housewife, and managed the household. She knew how to can, sew, embroidery, quilt, make anything from scratch. She survived multiple heart attacks and breast cancer. In her later years, she experienced circulatory deficits to her brain. She fractured her hip which resulted in her admission & Alfred to a local nursing home until their deaths.

Archie Ross's residence was DeQueen, Sevier Co., AR. Archie's first marriage resulted in two sons: Kenneth and John Ross, 1/2 brothers to Edward H. Ross.

Edward Ross' memories, "Juanita divorced Archie when I was in the first grade. Mom and I went to live with Sudie and Hubert Denton on the farm in Moss Creek outside of Danville, AR. Then she met Alfred. She met him in a bar, he was looking at her and she stuck out her tongue at him, he smiled and came over to where she was and the rest is history."

Edward Ross memories, "I was in the Air Cadets when Juanita and Alfred were shipped overseas to Germany for 3 years. They returned back on the ship, The United States. Juanita brought back china, crystal, and German whatnots that she loved to display in the house. She had this giant glass display case so all could view them, German carved wood pieces, Humbarines, and large pictures and German clocks she had bought while in stationed in Germany."

Juanita cared for her mother, Suzannah Lee Denton, in Lawton, OK during her declining years.

Alfred and Juanita would tell of the horrors they saw while over in Germany, the human ovens and still the odor that could be smelled. On the other hand, Juanita told of how she loved the German culture and the people. Juanita told of this young German girl that begged to be adopted by Juanita and Alfred and take her to America. How they traded things just for American cigarettes.

Alfred told of the Phillipines, he had pictures he would show of dead Japanese, and the horrors of war, not to scare us but remind us, to not forget.

At ages 42, Alfred & Juanita adopted Edward Ross's two oldest children after Edward's separation from his wife and raised them in Lawton, Comanche Co., OK.

Edward met Martha Chandler at the teen club at Ft. Sill, OK. She was with her friend, Carol Zito. Later Carol Zito married John Butler. Carol and John were baptismal godparents for some of Ed and Martha's children at Xavier's Catholic Church in Stillwater, OK.

Martha Chandler attended St. Mary's Catholic Church school in Lawton, OK.

My grandparents reminded us that we could live with our parents anytime we wanted but our parents never came until we were 17 and 18. Edward and Martha never said how sorry they were for leaving us, never assisted monetarily in raising us. Martha did want to explain what happened to her which we already knew. My grandmother would tell us that Ed would get drunk and beat her. I remember when she was beaten with a Eureka vacuum cleaner metal extension, and my dad was arrested, with the police dragging him out of the apartment. Then by age 2 1/2 to 3 years of age, my 3 brothers and I were taken to my dad's parents house and left, abandoned, by my parents. Ed and Martha left us and each other by 1960. In the care of my grandparents I was molested by my adopted father, step-grandfather. My brother suffered his own anguish due to the abandonment as well as I. The first time I heard my grandfather say he loved me was at age 20 and the last. My grandmother never did though she gave me 'names' when no one was around to hear. I doubt my brother heard the words 'we love you' more than once, maybe by my step-grandfather. To say the least the relationships were distant, a group of people living together but not close. They did teach me independence and to stand alone. I still do not trust anyone and relationships are very difficult. When I see the Nicke Nolte movie, "Affliction", it hits me so strongly of the dynamics of our group.
