After the death of his first wife, Samuel Shelton enlisted in the service of the Union Army, with Company H, First Arkansas Infantry on 10 Mar 1863 and remained in service until discharge at Fort Smith, AR on 10 Aug 1865. He was with General Steele in the Camden raid. Samuel met and married the widow of Lovett Lee, Amanda James Lee.
