Airoplanes were started by two people, Orville and his brother Wilbur Wright. It was Otta Lilienthal's death in a glider crash in 1896 which led the American Wright brothers to start studying the problems of flight. They realised that it was Lilienthal's method of controlling his gliders by shifting his body around which caused his death. In their search for a safer method of control, they studied the way birds balance themselves in flight by twisting the tips of their wings.
