LATEST NEWS

February 28, 2003

Towards the very end of May 2001, my brother and I took a trip to northeastern Minnesota, traveling first through Wisconsin. We had a great time. Initially we had intended to go west over Memorial day out towards Glacier National Park, but his vehicle gave us some trouble, first at the McDonalds in Viroqua, Wisconsin, then later in South Dakota (not to mention some border trouble), so we amended our plan and headed east again across the top portion of Minnesota, all the way to Superior National Forest. We took Hwy 1 through Superior National Forest, which is one of the most beautiful trips in all of North America in my opinion. At the end of Hwy 1, we took Hwy 61, which runs along the north shore of Lake Superior, and is a spectacular drive. In Superior National Forest, we drove to Crane Lake which is at the end of Hwy23, off of Hwy 1, arriving on May 28th. There, at Crane Lake, is a place called Scott's Seaplane Base. While there, we chartered a seaplane trip over the Canadian wilderness for the bargain price of $50 each! It was not a very long trip - about half an hour, but it was nice flying in a Cessna for the first time. After this, we started heading back home, first towards the shore of Lake Superior, where we camped out at Split Rock Lighthouse State Park (what an awesome park!!) According to my receipt, we stopped for gas on May 28th at 8:52 P.M. at the Silver Bay Amoco in Silver Bay, Minnesota. And another receipt of mine says we stopped on our return trip for gas on May 29th at 3:34P.M. at the Delap Oil Co. in Viroqua, Wisconsin. At some point during this trip, we also stopped at a place called Cold Springs Inc., sort of a combination bait & tackle shop selling Walleye, a bakery, gourmet coffee shop, ice cream parlor, and a petting zoo. What a combination! It's located at 8156 Highway 53 in Orr, Minnesota, and I highly recommend stopping in during the morning for coffee and their delicious cinnamon rolls! Val and Marilyn Cook are the proprietors. Their phone number was (218) 757-3191 and fax: 218-757-0160. They also have a son living in Eagle River,Alaska, who runs an ATV adventure tours company. His web site is www.alaskaatvadventures.com.
