Feeding

The Art of Feeding a sleddog

When you feed racing sleddogs it is of extreme importance that you do it the right way. A dog of 15-20 kg's needs 1010-1250 kcal every day, just to keep it alive.

But, if it works, say, 2 hours à day it needs 1800-2050 kcal/day. And if the workload is as much as 6 hours à day, then your dog needs 3400-3650 kcal/day!! If that is the case, you have to choose a diet with a high level of both fat and protein. Otherwise you dog runs with a filled and heavy stomach.

Therefore, it is preferable to split the daily amount into 2-3 smaller amounts, which is given morning, afternoon and evening. It increases both the dog's digestion and its running performance.

Liquid such as water is as important as feeding the dog. So it must always have access to fresh water. During rest periods the dog needs 1.5 l/day. But if the workload is increased, then the need for water also increases. Actually as much as up to 7 l/day.
