ANNA L. KLEIN SCHOOL

HISTORY OF THE ANNA L. KLEIN SCHOOL

The first public school in Guttenberg was founded in 1871. The Physical structure consisted of two stories and a basement with four classrooms. In 1900, the voters authorized to build a new schoolhouse where the playground area now stands. This building temporarily relieved the overcrowding and two subsequent extensions were constructed in 1909 and 1928.

The namesake of the school, Anna L. Klein, served as principal from 1928 until 1952. The towns people, namely the local V.F.W. petitioned the Board of Education to change the name of the school from Guttenberg Public School to its present name. At a special board meeting on October 23, 1952, the name formally changed to Anna L. Klein School.

In the Past fifteen years, the school has undergone many renovations. The two most recent being the addition of the Media Center in 1992 and the completion of the new extension in January 1996. This new wing includes a music room, a computer lab, an art room and nine classrooms. The overcrowding conditions at ALK have now been eliminated due to the efforts of the town of Guttenberg and the members of the Board of Education.
