Alaska Bull Moose in City of Anchorage

The Great Alaska Moose

Derived from the Algonquian dialect, the word moose means "muncher of little twigs." Not the most regal description for such a massive creature, but quite fitting. The moose devours nearly 30 pounds of willow stems daily. It is these "little twigs" (along with genes) that bring a bull moose to his seven-foot tall, 1,500-pound stature.

As the largest of the deer family, the moose's size is perhaps its most spectacular characteristic. A male's majestic crown of antlers can weigh up to 50 pounds and span 80 inches. Given his size, the animal is remarkably agile, covering rough terrain easily and fighting predators with its sharp hooves.

Have a great trip through Alaska!
