Nepal Crisis Deepens

KHATMANDU, NEPAL (TINN)---The ousted Prime Minister of Nepal, Sher Bahadur Deuba, has hit back at the sudden decision by King Gyanendra to dismiss him from office.

Mr Deuba, who was sacked along with his cabinet late on Friday, described the move as unconstitutional.

King Gyanendra justified his decision by saying that the prime minister had failed to organise national elections, which were scheduled to be held next month.

Mr Deuba had tried to get the king's permission to postpone the elections because of the increasingly difficult security situation caused by the Maoist insurgency.

His removal by the king is unprecedented in the history of multi-party democracy in Nepal.

It creates fresh uncertainty for the Himalayan kingdom, already battling rebels and paralysed by political in-fighting.
