1. What is a credit? How many do I need?

 

ANSWER- A credit generally means one hour of lecture class per week per semester or 15 hours per semester. A 3 credit course should be roughly 45 college hours. (Remember an hour is 50 minutes). Twelve (12) credits make you a full- time student. Anything less is considered part-time. Sixty (60) designated semester credits are required for an associate degree, while thirty (30) designated semester credits are required for a certificate of achievement. A bachelor’s degree at Touro requires 120 credits.

 

2. What is a prerequisite?

 

ANSWER - In the class schedule, a prerequisite is a course that must be taken before or in preparation for the course you are considering. A number of courses, as marked in the class schedule, also require a certain level of reading, writing or math skill before you are allowed to enroll in them.

 

3. What about concurrent requirements in the schedule?

 

ANSWER - You need to take both courses at the same time. This generally applies to science lectures and their corresponding laboratories.

 

4. What if I do not have the prerequisites for the class I want?

 

ANSWER - Check with the department offering the class. The instructor for the class may be able to determine if your job experience or background would enable you to be successful in the course. A department approval would be needed to register for the class. If you are lacking reading, writing or math skills required to enter the course, check with a faculty advisor who can help you find what you need and plan your schedule. Many courses now have basic academic skill requirements in reading, writing and/or mathematics. For these courses, you will be unable to enroll without demonstrating your reading, writing or math ability through an assessment test.

 

5. How do I get departmental or instructor approval for a course?

 

ANSWER - You must locate the academic department offering the course and go there to obtain written approval from either the department chair, deputy chair, or the instructor.

 

6. How can I get into a closed class?

 

ANSWER - A closed class means the class is full (no more seats are available). Enrollment in a closed class may not be possible. Each department handles this differently. Therefore, it is best to contact the appropriate dean. A class may reopen if a student drops the class during registration.

 

7. How many credits should I take if I'm working?

 

ANSWER - Most counselors recommend that if you are working 40 hours per week, you probably should not take more than eight credits or about two courses. If you are working 15 to 20 hours per week, you probably could handle a full load of 12 credits or more. Remember that for every hour in class, you can expect to do two hours of study and preparation.

 

8. How do I apply for financial aid?

 

ANSWER - Financial aid programs have different requirements. Check with the Student Financial Aid Office. Almost all financial aid programs require students to be full-time.

 

9. Where do I get Veterans assistance?

 

ANSWER - Check with the Registrar’s Office on the 23rd Street campus.

 

10. How do I get a "T" grade?

 

ANSWER - All grades, including the "T" (incomplete), are determined by your instructor. A T grade is calculated by assuming you received a zero on whatever work was missing.

 

11. Who can change grades?

 

ANSWER - It is the responsibility of your instructor to determine your grade for a class. If during the first six weeks of the following semester, your instructor decides a change of grade (from a "T" grade) is warranted, he sends a change of grade form to the Registrar. Changes of regular grades (not "T" grades) and after six weeks, changes of "T" grades must also be approved by the appropriate dean. Any appeals of grades should first be discussed with the instructor and then addressed to the relevant department chair.

 

12. Can a grade be taken off my transcript?

 

ANSWER - It is the policy of Touro College not to take a grade off a transcript. In exceptional circumstances, students may file a petition for a retroactive withdrawal from a course with the Committee on Academic Standing.

 

13. Where is the Registrar’s Office located?

 

ANSWER - The main Office of the Registrar is on the Touro 23rd Street campus. The Registrar maintains offices on all other campuses and most sites for your assistance.
