The Advisement and Counseling Service (ACS), a unit of The Dean of Students' Office at Touro College provides many important services to students. These services can be broken down into six components:

1. Assistance with personal and family problems and/or emotional difficulties.
2. Educational counseling including choosing a major and study skills (including time management, note-taking, and memory techniques).
3. Help in vocational decision making including appraisal of interest in various fields and exploring options and requirements. This is done both on a one-to-one basis and through the administration of various tests.
4. Assistance with adjustment to college life, expectations, college rules and regulations.
5. Academic counseling including information about college academic requirementsand changes in those requirements, choice of courses and assistance at registration. Special support and monitoring is offered to students in poor academic standing. Help is also offered to those students who are formulating appeals to the Committee on Academic Standing. Students who are having difficulties with specific courses are also urged to contact the Service.
6. Referral to other sources of information and assistance both internal and external. External sources include immigration assistance, social services and welfare agencies, drug and alcohol counseling, and psychological counseling.

Perhaps the most important service that the Advisement and Couneling Service provides is offering Touro students a place where someone will sit and listen to them unburden themselves of their problems. The Service is also a source of literature on various topics. Some of these handouts are generated by the Service itself, while others come from other Touro offices and outside agencies.

Note that not all services are offered in all schools and at all sites and that not all advisors are uquipped or trained to offer all services. While some of our counselors are generalists, others specialize in specific areas such as career guidance.Many of our services are customized to meet the unique needs of the different populations at our various locations.
