It is the new unifying name being used for the academic, personal, and career counseling offered by the different undergraduate schools of Touro College.

The new name reflects Touro’s commitment to improve both the quality and quantity of advisement services offered by the College. A new advisement handbook for advisors, "Tips" sheets for students, and this FAQ (frequently asked questions) are examples of how Touro is working to improve our advisement and counseling services.

Your actual advisor/counselor at your local Touro site is not changing. Neither are the faculty advisors who advise you about your major or the professional advisors who advise about graduate and professional schools. Academic Advisement is a continuing process of communication between an advisor and a student. Academic advisemnt enhances the quality of your experience in college and includes (but is not limited to the planning of short term and long term educational and career goals, discovery of appropriate course and program recommendations for reaching those goals, and referral to other college resources. Advisement is a shared responsibility between the student and advisor. The student and the advisor must work together to develop and maintain the relationship.

The career placement office remains a separate unit, which like the new service, is a part of the Office of the Dean of Students.

Any student currently registered for credit courses or developmental courses may take advantage of the ACS.

Students visit the Advisement and Counseling Service for a variety of reasons. You might wish to seek help in deciding on a major and a career direction; in improving study skills or overcoming learning problems; in coping with a personal crisis; in dealing with a wide range of personal issues such as concerns about self-esteem, ethnic identity, alcohol and drugs, or family conflicts, or you might be talking to an advisor is part of the every-term registration process.

The staff at the Advisement and Counseling Services includes psychologists, social workers, faculty and members in different fields. They represent a variety of theoretical orientations and specialties. In addition to their advising duties, some advisors serve as instructors, members of college committees or in other capacities within the college and general community.

Many times in life people must face difficult situations. Problems can seem confusing and overwhelming. Sometimes choices appear so limited that every possible outcome feels like more discomfort and unhappiness. An objective professional can often help you during these times. The Advisement and Counseling Service provides a quiet place where you can discuss your concerns in private with an experienced professional.

All communications is held in strict confidence. The only exception is the unusual situation in which there is a clear danger to either yourself or to others.

There is no charge to eligible students except for nominal fees associated with some national testing programs.

You may make an appointment for counseling in person at service locations. Office hours vary with school and site. You can usually be seen at least briefly immediately or within several days of the first contact. If you request a particular counselor, you may have a longer wait.
