September’s Focus: |
|
An area that lists and explains problem solving strategies (the problem solver series is a good one for junior students).
Tiered instruction, lessons delivered to the whole group, those who grasp the concept begin on seatwork, continued, scaffolded instruction continued to those who need it.
Math journals. |
|
During math centres, we’re going to have to show self-discipline and solve problems without the teacher’s help sometimes. |
|
In our classroom, you’ll see:
Lots of manipulatives (unifix cubes, counters, grids, nets, prisms, etc.)
Readily-accessible tools (calculators, rulers, graph paper, protractors, ten frames, etc.)
Whole-group instruction, including think alouds.
Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) groups.
Math centres that allow all students to have small group instruction on a rotational basis.
Material presented using contexts familiar to students and utilizing visuals, oral instructions (worded in more than one way) and concrete materials.
Bulletin boards that illustrate and define math terminology in age-appropriate language. |
