Robots have many uses these days. We to make our lives easier and faster can use them, but another group of people is using them to take a leap into our future. The people at NASA have been using robots to see if we humans are able to live on other planets. They have devised several types of robotic technology to check to see if other environments are able to sustain our lives.
Rovers
Rovers are used for exploring the surface of a planet hands on. They allow the scientists to see pictures of what they see at the same time, and allow them to take samples of soil or other substances. These robots have the ability to drill, measure temperature, examine samples, and scale tough terrain.
The mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity are used to study water on Mars. They have robotic arms, drilling tools, and four cameras wit 3-D images. They landed in January and continue to give valuable information.
Humanoid Robots
NASA has developed a robot that has almost all the functions and size of a human. The robot , Robonaut, has all the two arms, with five fingers on each, and 150 sensors on each arm, a thermal suit to protect it from the varying temperatures and power management system.
Robotic Arms
Robotic arms are used to throw or receive things in space that are out of the astronauts reach. They have been used for the past 20 years and are part of many new innovations in space. A robotic arm such as DOF is made of 3 parts, a shoulder, a elbow and a wrist. The arms can be used to move a block of ices that has formed, moving antennas and throwing or receiving satellites .
The Future of Robotics
Researchers are now developing new methods to explore planets. They have thought of 3 foot long insect like robots that can fly and transform to other shapes to scale walls and pass ravines. They could be able to pull themselves apart, and rebuild using “muscles and joints” that are 1,000 times stronger than any human.
