Long before robots were sent into space, all other work that needed to be done in space was accomplished by humans. Also space exploration was sometime trial and error. Now since there are robonauts, astronauts that are robots, it is much easier to accomplish tasks and explore into other parts of space without endangering any lives. Robonauts are used to do routine jobs that are too time consuming, too dangerous or for space walks. Since robots are not able to feel heat, they are able to complete space walks easily, while being exposed to solar radiation. Robonauts are not completely automated yet, so they are controlled by a system called telepresence. Telepresence is a system in which a robot can be controlled by a human that is far away, through a communication system allowing humans to move their bodies to produce the movement of the robot. This takes place by hooking up sensors to the human that correspond to the sensors used on the body parts of the robot. This technology has increased the ability of the robots that are used in space. These robonauts will be able to do anything that a human can do in space plus more. In addition to the robot being controlled through telepresence, it can be work along the side of an astronaut while working automated.
