Night Watch by Terry Pratchett

The main character of Night Watch is not one John Keel.

His Grace Sir Samuel Vimes, Commander of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch, is pursuing the criminal Carcer in a rooftop chase when an unfortunate accident sends both cop and robber back in time twenty years. Vimes wakes up in the streets of an Ankh-Morpork ruled by the infamous Lord Winder; where the city simmers ominously on the edge of rebellion, a city under the thumbscrews of the Day Watch; where young Sam Vimes, newest addition to the Night Watch, is about to meet the man who will teach him all he knows: Sergeant John Keel.

Who has just been murdered by a cold-blooded, canny thief called Carcer.

Now Commander Vimes, separated from friends, fine cigars, and loving wife, has to take up Keel’s baton and teach himself everything he knows. But now he’s run the wrong way along the endless bifurcating corridors of Time, he can’t resist ducking into a different passageway this time around—although he doesn’t know what horrors may lurk at the other end.

This is his chance to make some sweeping changes (with the aid of Lu-Tze and the Monks of History).

In the fight for Truth, Justice, Equality, and Reasonably Priced Love, sometimes it’s best to settle for a hard-boiled egg…
