Stairsteps
Topic: Puzzle

The deadline for this puzzle is October 31.

Look at the picture above. (If it doesn't show up on your screen, you can still do the puzzle. Draw yourself a picture if you like.) Here we have a square. Each side measures 20 feet. Running from corner to corner of the square is a red "stairstep" pattern. Each stair has the same height and the same width; each one is perfectly parallel to the top and bottom of the square.

If there are 15 stairs, how long would the red line be if we pulled it out flat? In other words, what number would we get if we added up the height and width of all the steps?

What about if there are 50 stairs?

Please click on "post comment" to send me your answers. Solutions will not be posted until after October 31, to give everyone a chance to try the puzzle.
