The repute of Volvo single deckers encouraged the company to put their Ailsa Double Decker onto the UK market with some impressive results, made possible by excellent technical specifications, road handling, quality engineering and passenger comfort. A semi-integral double deck underframe with Volvo TD 70H front mounted engine, the Ailsa had a five speed gearbox and an all welded sealed box section frame with a channel peripheral frame, protected by the renowned Volvo undersealants and paints. Many authorities displayed a keen interest in this vehicle including Manchester and West Midlands. In the early 1980's Strathclyde P.T.E tooke deklivery of around thirty Mark111s with Alexander R type coachwork. In 1983 even more operators expressed an interest in the Ailsa.
