About the location and pricing of this reunion:

Your reunion committee (me, Tom Allinger, Monique Bolan, Le Lemon, and Robin Chesley) understands the concern about the reunion fee and location, so we want to provide some additional information.

1. There are so few volunteers to help with these reunions - we all have demanding jobs, most people have kids, and everyone is busy... And without a large, dedicated committee who can’t wait to give up their personal time to work on this (!), we simply don’t have the manpower to research where our classmates are located, be party planners, handle printing and mailing, create a database, manage the finances, develop and sign contracts with a hotel or party facility and caterer AND disk jockey, put our own financial standing at risk if classmates cancel out, etc. The only answer is to subcontract the reunion... or not hold one at all.

We would really appreciate your support and positive, constructive comments if you’re attending the reunion. In addition, we’ve been asking people who are really uncomfortable with the pricing to ask themselves whether it’s worth $20 or $30 extra on a ticket to have saved your personal time rather than coordinating the reunion. Please understand that we say this not as a challenge, but as a practical way to present this. Because rest assured that if anyone wants to be involved in arranging the fees and event, they need only step up to volunteer!

2. This is a landmark reunion, and we wanted to have it in a good spot. All of the venues we looked at in PG County (that were available on the dates we were considering) were, well... Not the kind of spots we wanted for you to have a great evening with your friends. The least expensive fee we would have arranged for would have been about $13 less, and given the difference in amenities, we felt it made sense to go a little higher. After all, this IS the big one - some classmates have never been to a reunion before but may come to this one, and most certainly won’t come to any after this one.

3. Why Gaithersburg? Those of us who volunteer on the reunion make the best decisions we can on behalf of our classmates. We wanted an attractive facility, nice hotel rooms, located accessibly near shops, restaurants, and movies (more ways to visit with friends, for those coming in for the weekend). The Gaithersburg Marriott provided those options in a brand-new setting.

We are really looking forward to a great time with all of you! Be safe going to and from the reunion, and while you’re at the reunion, please take a moment to thank Tom, Monique, Le, and Robin for their work. As I noted above, feel free to call or write me this week for more information!
