Jon's talks to Pop World

'Our Film Is Mad!'

Yesterday we spoke to Jo, and today we catch up with her bandmate Jon. The charming fella tells all about S Club Juniors, S Club's new movie Seeing Double and the special appearance of a certain Mr Gareth Gates...

Is it good to be back?
'Yeah! It's lovely to be back in the wind and the rain! I love the autumn/winter time - It's my favourite time of year. Honestly!'

Jo's off ill, so how are you coping as a five-piece?
'It's really weird, 'cos now we're a normal-sized band! The thing that made S Club 7 different all these years was that there were seven of us, and at the moment we're a 'normal' band. Eurgh! Don't like that! But Jo will be back with us soon - she's just taking time off with some discs in her back. She does do a few things with us, but nothing too strenuous!'

What was it like living in Barcelona?
'It was lovely - me and Hannah shared an apartment and it was gorgeous! We had a Jacuzzi and a balcony with this great view. It was a lot posher than my pad at home!'

How did the movie go?
'Well, it's all done and dusted. It wasn't too taxing because, whereas most movies take up to six months, I think we filmed it in about 20 days. Hopefully it won't show! We had a far greater time filming the film than the TV series. I can't wait to see it now. I'm a bit nervous, but I can't wait for it to come out!'

Are there any funny bits you can tell us about?
'There are loads of funny bits throughout the film. The whole idea is completely mad - this evil scientist is trying to take over the youth of the world by cloning all the pop stars, and we're one of the groups he clones. He clones everyone - Madonna, Elton John, Michael Jackson, George Michael - and all their lookalikes are in the film, along with a certain Mr Gareth Gates, who makes an appearance as a clone of himself! It's really good fun and totally tongue-in-cheek. And there are some good musical performances in between the dialogue.'

Of all the TV series you've filmed, which has been your favourite?
'Viva S Club, without a doubt. We had so much fun filming this one and we worked with a great director, who was a complete nutcase! He let us get away with murder, 'cos we changed the script so many times, and he just turned a blind eye and let us get on with it When you watch it, you'll see that half the time we're just wetting ourselves laughing. The outtakes are really funny too. But I definitely enjoyed myself in Barcelona. I really want to go back there soon.'

Are you excited about the new album?
Yes. Very, very excited. This one has to be my favourite so far. We got the final copy the other day and I listened to, and I promise it just doesn't sound like an S Club album. There are about five really upbeat songs that are quite dark - they're not the typical poppy, 'everyone's skipping' kind of songs. There are still a few ballads on there, but you could imagine going to a club and hearing some of the songs there.'

What are your five favourite tracks?
'Well, there's a song called 'Bittersweet', which is a beautiful R&B ballad that Jo sings. It sounds like something you'd expect Pink to do - it's got quite an edge to it. Then there's 'Dance', which is basically a dark and dirty track! If you heard it in a club, you'd get up straight away and just dance all night. There's a really lovely ballad called 'Straight From The Heart', which isn't too mushy - it's a bit more grown-up, and Jo sings that. But I've got to get one of my ones in too, so I'll say 'In Too Deep', which I co-wrote with a guy called Ray Hedges (writer of loads of Boyzone hits). It's got an R&B vibe and I sing lead vocals on the track. I'm really proud of it. Tina's also written a track on the album, 'Secret Love', which is really cool too.'

How are the S Club Juniors?
'We haven't seen them for ages, bless them. We feel like we've let our babies go, let them fly the nest! They've done so well for themselves and they're still such a nice bunch of kids - they're not all bratty or starry. I hope they go on to sell millions of albums and be even more successful, 'cos they work so hard, like us, and yet they manage to balance it with all their schoolwork. One day, when we decide to call it a day, I hope they take over our crown and carry on the name.'

You must have been asked every question possible, so which is your least favourite?
'Well, the other day, we started getting asked how we got together! Since we've come back with the new material, it's happened on four different occasions. It's so weird 'cos we know we've told the same people about five times! They must have been asleep for four years! The other one is, 'What does the 'S' stand for?', although we haven't been asked that for ages, which I'm quite happy about!'

You've already accomplished so much at such a young age - what's left to do?
'After S Club, I'd love to do a solo album. I still enjoy singing and acting so much, I want to carry on doing all of it. I don't want to have to choose one over the other. I'll just have to make sure I get a good agent!'
