- The LTTE (currently lead by Velupillai Pirapaharan) is currently fighting
for their own separate home land in the northern portion of the country,
called Jaffna. The Sri Lankan government is denying this to the Tamil
people.
- The war started about 21 years ago, following riots in the capital of the
country in which hundreds of innocent Tamils were killed.
- Different areas of Sri Lanka are controlled by either the LTTE or the Sri
Lankan government. The majority of the fighting takes place in the north,
near the Jaffna peninsula.
- Both sides have committed such crimes as extortion, rape and kidnap as
part of their attack on each other.
- The LTTE has been identified by the United States government as a known
terrorist organization.
- The LTTE has been identified by the United Nations as a terrorist
organization that uses child soldiers (under the age of 15)
