Dr. Riyad F. Nassar
President
Dr. Riyad Nassar, Dean of the College from 1971 to 1982,
assumed the presidency of the Lebanese American University on October 1,
1982. A Chemist by training, he holds a faculty rank of Professor of Chemistry
at LAU.
As Dean, Dr. Nassar supervised the establishment of LAU’s
two off-campus branches at Louaize and Sidon. He was also instrumental
in promoting the University’s popular Dual Degree Programs in Engineering
and Pharmacy.
Dr. Nassar received his Master of Science Degree
from the American University of Beirut and his Ph.D. from Georgia Institute
of Technology. He taught at Georgia Institute of Technology, at the Lebanese
University and at LAU. He was born in Monsif, Lebanon in 1934, is married
to the former Hellen Ghosn and has four children.
Dr. Nassar came to his new position with extensive administrative
experience, with demonstrated ability to work successfully with the faculty
and division chairpersons of the University, and with knowledge of both
LAU and the problems of higher education in Lebanon and throughout the Arab
World. During his tenure as President the Institution grew to a multi-campus
University with three campuses: Beirut, Byblos and Sidon. During his tenure
as President, the student enrollment tripled.
