The Ace in the Hole

Taylor's mother called the Cherokee Nation their "ace in the hole". If you were over 1/8 Cherokee you would be allowed to live there, and Taylors mother always said that if things got too hard they could move out there. Looking at it now Taylor decides she would have to be held at gunpoint to have to live in the Cherokee Nation. Here, when Taylor leaves a bar, an Indian woman puts a child in her car. Taylor is unable to refuse her and has no other option than to take the child for the time being. She drives to a motel and begs the woman for a warm place for the child and her to sleep. Taylor ends up working at the "Broken Arrow" Motel for a while changing beds just to earn money but then sets out at the first of the year with the child, who she named Turtle because of her grip.
