MuleFHL Free Agency Rules

Free agency period

After the final bid list update on the the 16th, GM’s will have 4 days to match the best offer on their Restricted Free Agents. All RFA’s whose “offer sheets” are not matched by 10 PM mountain time on Thursday December 20th will go to the team holding the offer sheet, and compensation will be awarded to the team losing the RFA.  More on RFA’s and the bid list can be found below.

Unrestricted Free Agents

Teams may offer UFA’s a contract up to four years in length, with a yearly salary a maximum of three times the player’s current yearly salary, with any sum of money for the signing bonus.  Newly added UFAs (Bryan Berard etc.) will be assumed to have had a $1.2 million dollar contract last season. Anyone can make an offer for an unrestricted free agent. No compensation will be sent to the team losing the UFA.

Unrestricted Free Agents will go to the team offering the best contract in terms of total value (length x yearly salary + signing bonus).

Each team may sign a maximum of 5 unrestricted free agents.

Restricted Free Agents

Schedule of compensation for MHFHL restricted free agents:

If new pro contract equals / new team must give old team

up to $500,000/year / a 3rd round pick

(must be a pick from the 2002 or 2003 entry draft)

$501,000 to $900,000/year / a 2nd round pick

(must be a pick from the 2002 or 2003 entry draft)

$901,000 to $2,000,000/year / a 1st round pick + cash equal to 1 year of new contract

(must be a pick from the 2002 or 2003 entry draft)

$2,001,000 to $4,000,000/year / two 1st round picks + cash equal to 1 year of new contract

(one pick must be from the 2002 or 2003 entry draft)

$4,001,000/year or higher / three 1st round picks + cash equal to 1 year of new contract

(one pick must be from the 2002 or 2003 entry draft)

If you don’t have the required compensation, don’t make the offer. GM’s who make RFA offers that they cannot back up with compensation will be fined.

Teams may offer a contract up to four years in length, with a yearly salary a maximum of three times the player’s current yearly salary.

Restricted Free Agents will also sign with the team offering the best contract in terms of total value (length x yearly salary). There are no signing bonuses for RFA’s.  Again, the signing is contingent upon the RFA’s current team either matching the offer or accepting the compensation.

RFA signing is unlimited, but again you must have the compensation to be able to sign the player.

Bidding Process

Free Agency will be handled via email.

To make an offer on any type of free agent, you must send an email to emulerichard@shaw.ca

Use this format when making your offers.

Subj: [PLAYER NAME]

Body of message:

[TEAM NAME] offers [PLAYER NAME] [YEARLY SALARY] per year for [TERM] years.

For example,

::Subj: Paul Laus

::Atlanta offers Paul Laus $500,000 per year for 4 years.”

Offers that do not have the player’s name in the title of the email will be tossed out.

Offers where the message body does not match this exact format will be tossed out. Do not send me emails listing the total contract amount. Break it down exactly as I have written it out above.

Offers sent to the main league email will also be tossed out.

The Bid List

A listing of the top bids for UFA’s and RFA’s will be updated and published on the website daily. Get your bids in by 5 pm mountain time to have them listed on that day’s update.

The first high offer on a free agent will be the one that is accepted. For instance, if GM #1 offers $3 million/year for 3 years on Thursday, and GM #2 offers the same bid on Friday, GM #1’s bid will stand as the highest bid.

GM’s offering the same high bid for the same FA on the same day will both be listed under that free agent. If, at the end of free agency, more than one GM holds the high bid on a free agent, a coin flip will determine who gets the FA (in the case of UFA’s) or who signs the FA to an offer sheet (in the case of RFA’s).

That’s all.  If I missed anything, I’m sure it will be brought to my attention soon enough, and an email explaining whatever caused confusion will be distributed.

Good luck.

Thanks to Feebs of the MHFHL for allowing me to use his Free Agent Rules as a strict guideline.
