Hermandad de Sigma
Iota Alpha, Incorporada
is a national Latina-based sorority founded in the East Coast. Our foundation
lays in the word "Hermandad," which means "sisterhood"
in Spanish, and is derived from our Latin American roots. Since our
founding year 1990, we have been able to achieve National status and
become one of the largest Latina sororities in the country.
We are united by our common
goals and bonded by the ties of sisterhood. As an organization, we are
committed to the community; dedicated to our personal empowerment through
academic achievement; and continue to increase the awareness of our
beautiful and diverse backgrounds. Our founders came together as visionary
and ambitious young women. Their vision helped establish a foundation
that has guided the organization to its accomplishments and expansion.
SIA
was founded on September 29, 1990 at 4 schools: SUNY
Albany, SUNY New Paltz, SUNY Stony Brook and Rennselear Polytechnic
Institute. Presently, SIA
is composed of chapters in New York State, New Jersey, Pennsylvania,
Illinois, California,Texas, Massachusetts, Maryland and Virginia.
These chapters are composed of undergraduate, graduate and professional
women. We encourage all women, whether they are in the Hermandad or
not, to promote a diverse cultural and social environment. Our endeavor
is to work as sisters united by our common goals, but at the same time
we value our personal identities and individualism. Through the bonds
of sisterhood, we develop leadership, scholarship, sportsmanship and
friendship.
